Humans have worked with bacteria to make all sorts of creations: yogurt, sourdough bread, beer, cheese, and now textiles. 👕⚗ The start-up Modern Synthesis has come up with a way to create sustainable fabrics, helping cut down on emissions within the fashion industry. Their methodology: feeding bacteria to create #nanocellulose, a special version of nature's "building block," cellulose. Nanocellulose is eight times stronger than steel on a fiber level, and when combined with a natural textile material, can produce clothing. Get more details on the creation process by watching this CNN video linked below! https://lnkd.in/gt2Q_Hzv #fashion #greenchemistry #bacteria #sustainability

EMBRACE HONESTY💚🌏 Nucycl® Fiber is a revolutionary textile innovation that embodies honesty at its core. Here’s why: 1. RECYCLED FROM TEXTILE WASTE instead of made with virgin materials, reducing the strain on our planet’s resources 2. RECYCLABLE AND BIODEGRADABLE ensuring we tread lightly on the Earth from production to disposal 3. REGENERATIVE FASHION which can be re-formed and re-used thus eliminating the need for virgin materials 4. NO PLASTIC, NO MICRO-SHEDDING since we are made from natural cotton cellulose and not synthetic fibers 5. FEELS GREAT, PERFORMS BETTER with a fabric that’s soft as cotton, yet strong as polyester #NucyclFiber #SustainableFashion #RegenerativeTextiles #CircularEconomy #TextileInnovation #SustainableStyle #SlowFashion #SustainableMaterials

Stretchy fibres offer comfort and a snug fit, but are they recyclable? According to a 2021 EU report, elastane, commonly found in these textiles, poses challenges for recycling. Mechanical recycling is difficult as elastane resists shredding and requires high forces to obtain individual fibres, while thermomechanical recycling struggles with the inability of elastane to melt, complicating fibre-to-fibre recycling. Chemical recycling shows promise, as several techniques can degrade elastane, however elastane degradation products deserve more attention due to their potential toxicity. RISE, together with Chalmers University of Technology are currently collaborating on this issue, to understand where these degradation products end up, and if their release can be mitigated: https://lnkd.in/dtrHyazS Looking to the future, biobased fibres like the polyester PTT offer potential alternatives to elastane. In a BioInnovation project, RISE and project partners have looked into the potential to scale up PTT production using cheaper biobased materials and verified its recyclability. Made entirely from wood cellulose, APR's viscose staple fibres (VSF) bring you lively, enduring colors while maintaining their natural shine. What makes them stand out? It’s biodegradable; in just 28 days, these fibres achieve a remarkable biodegradation level of 93.6%, returning to the soil within two years of use. This exceptional biodegradability earned APR’s VSF the international OK biodegradability WATER and OK biodegradability SOIL labels from the accredited certification board, TÜV AUSTRIA Group. Biodegradable fabrics represent the future of eco-conscious fashion, swiftly reducing textile waste in landfills compared to synthetic fibres. #SustainableFashions #APRSustainability #Sustainability #Viscose #Biodegradable #Rayon #Fibre

🌱 Synthetic vs. Natural Fibers: The Great Debate 🌟 In the world of textiles, the debate between #synthetic and #natural fibers is more relevant than ever. As we strive for #sustainability and innovation, it's essential to understand the unique qualities and implications of each. 🔹 Synthetic Fibers: Typically derived from petrochemicals, which can have #environmental impacts. They may also lack breathability and can contribute to microplastic pollution. 🔸 Natural Fibers: Derived from plants or animals, such as cotton, wool, and silk. They offer breathability, #comfort, and biodegradability. Natural fibers are often perceived as more #sustainable and #eco-friendly. 🌍 The Future of Textiles: The industry is evolving, with innovations aiming to combine the best of both worlds. It's crucial for us as consumers and professionals to stay informed and make choices that balance performance, cost, and environmental impact. What are your thoughts on the future of textiles? Are you team synthetic or natural, or do you believe in a hybrid approach?
