#gambleawareness in the workplace. If you are in double of how to approach the conversation, your #eap can be a good and safe place to start.
Would you know if someone in the workplace or in your family was gambling? A recent review found some 300,000 UK adults are problem gamblers, and with between 6-10 other people who are part of the gamblers network, whether that's family members, friends and employers or colleagues, being affected by the issues that stem from gambling that means another 3.8 million people, including children are impacted. This is Safer Gambling Week and we're considering how we can all be more aware of some of the signs that someone might be gambling and what we can do if we think someone is struggling with their gambling. #SGWeek23

“I blew $500 dollars on one stupid game.” “I’m gambling on my phone before class and during the school day, even during the 2-minute walk to my next class.” “I’ve borrowed money from friends, family, everyone. There’s no one left who trusts me.” “I thought I hit rock bottom before—but this is definitely rock bottom now.” March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and this year’s theme is Every Story Matters—a reminder, says the National Council on Problem Gambling, that “every narrative, battle and triumph related to problem gambling is significant.” Bringing these accounts to light is no small undertaking, for even as online gambling continues to see explosive growth, we’re less likely to hear the stories or see representation of those who struggle with it. Because problem gamblers exhibit no outward symptoms and are often plagued by a deep sense of shame, this is often called “the silent addiction”—and for underage gamblers, who may fear legal repercussions, this silence is even more pronounced. But here in Eastern Connecticut, we know we cannot afford to remain silent. Home to two of the world’s largest casinos, our region also faces cultural and community factors which make residents uniquely vulnerable to gambling disorders. Problem gambling rates are highest during the adolescent and teen years, so the time to protect our youth is now. By preventing young people from gambling until age 21 or later, we can protect a generation from this destructive and potentially lifelong addiction. 🎉 GambleAware has called on partners and stakeholders to actively engage in addressing the stigma associated with problem gambling treatment, which, it claims, continues to represent a major barrier for those seeking support. 🤝 📢 The announcement comes as new data commissioned by GambleAware reveals that nearly two-thirds (64%) of adults in Great Britain who have experienced gambling problems have not discussed their issues with anyone, with 39% attributing their silence to stigma. 🤐 👩💼 Chief Executive Zoe Osmond said: “It’s alarming to see the number of people who are struggling in isolation. As a hidden addiction, gambling harms can be incredibly hard to spot from the outside. 🚨 “It is, therefore, critical that people impacted are aware of the wide range of support services available, and that they feel safe to come forward. Anyone can be impacted by gambling harms, but the first step is to open up and have that first conversation, ideally as early as possible.” 🗣️💬 #GambleAware #StigmaCampaign #ResponsibleGambling #MentalHealth #Awareness #Support #EndTheStigma #SafeBetting #HealthyGaming #GamblingAwareness #CampaignForChange #MindfulGaming #CommunitySupport #SBCNews #Europe #GamingIndustry #PositiveChange #Wellness #PlayerProtection #Empowerment #SocialResponsibility #PublicHealth #BreakTheStigma #ResponsibleGamingInitiative #GamblingEducation #HealthierChoices #CommunityEngagement #MindfulBetting #EmpathyInGaming #BuildingAwareness #PositiveImpact #ChangeForGood Read More⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e8xrKp32

March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month. Problem gambling is any gambling that negatively impacts someone’s life. Any kind of gambling can become problem gambling. It can happen to anyone. And--importantly--people can recover from problem gambling. Problem gambling is a public health issue. As many as 96% of people with problem gambling also meet the criteria for another mental health condition. Research suggests that ~16% of individuals with problem gambling will attempt suicide, compared to 0.7% of the population. Yet there are no federal funds allocated to support problem gambling services. We outline HRiA’s approach in our blog post about problem gambling: https://lnkd.in/eJhFJgTj Check out this FAQ from the National Council on Problem Gambling to learn more about this mental health condition that impacts 6M+ Americans. bit.ly/PGAMFAQ #PGAM2024 #gambling #problemgambing #publichealth

It is no coincidence that Problem Gambling Awareness Month falls during the biggest time of the year for college basketball. With the NCAA basketball tournament just around the corner, we should be aware of the impact that March Madness can have on an individual with a gambling addiction. Here are three tips on how you help yourself and others with addressing issues concerning problem gambling: Protect your recovery: Plan ahead with what to say when asked to join a bracket pool. Spend more time with people who don’t gamble and avoid the people, places, and things during this time that trigger thoughts of gambling. Make sure to plan ahead for what to do and where to do it during the month of March that minimizes exposure to the games and gambling Educate yourself: In order to have successful conversations about problem gambling it is important to educate ourselves on the topic. Here is a great resource that can help provide information on problem gambling and how it impacts an individual: NCP Gambling Have the conversation: Any time is a great time to have a conversation about the risks of gambling and gambling addiction in a non-judgmental and conversational manner. For tips on how to have this conversation with a friend, family member, or loved one check out this TedTalk presented by Jody Bechtold, LCSW, ICGC-II, BACC Reach out for help: If you or someone you know is struggling with problem gambling, do not hesitate to reach out for help. We have several trained & certified clinicians at The Better Institute.
