We’re thrilled to announce that #WhatIf An Immersive Story has made it to the finals in the XR Film & Experience of the Year category at the 8th International AIXR XR Awards! Dive into the Multiverse like never before on Apple Vision Pro.
During my time at Cornell Tech, I immersed myself in the world of virtual reality. VR fascinates me because it sits at the intersection of technology, design, and human factors. This work is crucial as it informs and advances my journey toward becoming a human-centered software engineer.
Project Heimdall, a replay system for virtual reality, was my independent research project at the XR Collaboratory. This package is invaluable for conducting VR user studies and analyzing interactions in situ. The most enjoyable part of this project was designing interactions that not only leverage the affordances of a 3D space but also feel intuitive. The video showcases all the capabilities of this replay package.

How do immersive environments work in the #applevisionpro? Are they 360 panoramas? Is there an actual mesh? Can you walk around in them (and how far)?
Yes - well, kind of.
Answering these questions is not only fun, but I am learning about it as I answer them! I had no idea how large the walkable area was - or that other non-apple environments (like Avengers Tower in Disney+ or Steve Jobs theater in Keynote) all have the same limitations and features.

Very well put together visual experience with the potential to be quite lightweight on system compute demands. Unless there is interactivity with the wall screens that portion could be successfully achieved with prerendered video that is synced or run as a single larger display.
Hard to fully tell without having seen it in person how it fully works but I suspect the following:
The floor while it is getting a lot of shadows from bright lights above could either be achieved with a couple of downward projectors or an led floor. The combination of real time animation generated through unreal engine (as Nolan Ether mentioned) for the floor combined with sensor data from a couple of lidar modules or potentially even lighterweight blob tracking with cameras to track people provide an update to the animation generated in unreal engine for the marshmellow deformations on the floor.
Great combination of the visual floor to give a sense of interactivity but I can't tell from the video if it extends beyond the floor. Overall a solid experience.
I am curious from a UI/UX perspective how viewers felt about the sudden visual acceleration of the floor. Without the feeling of movement there is a high chance of motion sickness or discomfort from the lack of matching visual and vestibular human systems. Anyone know what, if anything, Sony did to help reduce this in this experience?
Check out this immersive Ghostbusters experience at the Sony booth at CES 2024!
A few months ago I shared the incredible Ghostbusters short film that Sony Pictures Entertainment created using real-time technology from Unreal Engine.
Now they've repurposed it into an experiential activation, and it looks pretty awesome! 👻

#BehindTheScenes of...a #concert with zero humans on the stage, and a relatively packed theater every day, 2X a day. After the BTS, the #trailer for the finished and polished product is demonstrated.
Shows such as these are #experiential unto themselves, but they have a "long-tail." Should there come a point where the specially made theater is repurposed for something else, but similar, another effort entirely, the show can be turned into a #vr and/or #ar concert, though I think for now, the presentation will look best in the former.
You could charge "tickets" for entrance into the #digitaltwin of the #irl theater, or sell the entire experience for fans who want to watch it again and again. I recall discussing this with #MSGsphere, and there will eventually be something similar, given that they can make #volumetric recordings from the way the staging was designed. You'll be able to sit in any part of the theater to enjoy the show with #spatialaudio. It's coming, but not at the expense of losing people in seats, think of it as a back catalog for now.
For these types of volumetric concerts, no matter where you are, you can enjoy the show with friends and family, on other devices and platforms, even if they are not in a headset. The experience is never the same as when you can be immersed and feel a sense of immediate presence, but at least you can still enjoy something together, in #realtime.
When I was at a certain company, one of the things I had pitched was what the future of the #musicindustry could be, with #vr#conceptalbums, and not just straightforward performances. Granted, not everyone's a fantastic visual #storyteller or familiar with the technologies involved (::cough:: you can always hire for that ::cough), but for those that are, it's a big blue ocean of untapped #creative and #financial opportunities.

I decided to introduce a new section on my account "Lives of remarkable people". I'm going to tell you about the cool people around me. Yesterday I had breakfast with Anton Zhdanov, the founder of the 360 Max VR theater chain. Anton is one of the pioneers in the field of VR-movie production, and now they are building a network of specialized spaces where anyone can watch a movie in a new format. The guys are forming a new niche, and it was interesting to hear about their experience in this field and discuss the future development of VR-industry and cinemas. It's always interesting to talk to pioneers who are creating unique things, and learn about their experience firsthand. By the way, do you watch movies in 360°? What do you think of the idea of building a business based on them?
