These tankers are set to be chartered by 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐬’ 𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐂𝐎 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐋𝐭𝐝 (𝐏𝐓𝐋𝐂𝐋). The contracts, signed after a Memorandum of Understanding 14 months prior, mark a crucial step in turning ambitious environmental goals into actionable solutions. Proman Stena welcomes final pair of methanol tankers These 49,000-dwt tankers are the final two vessels in Proman Stena’s initial six-strong methanol-fuelled tanker fleet. The joint venture between Stena Bulk and methanol producer Proman was initially meant for three long-term time-chartered vessels but has been extended to cover three additional Proman-owned vessels. GSI built Proman Stena Bulk’s fleet over the last three years – a period which included the Covid-19 pandemic. Executing the newbuildings during this unique period required close collaboration between Stena Bulk, Proman and GSI. It has created a blueprint for the industry to follow as it scales up methanol-fuelled shipping over the coming decade. Both vessels are 49,990-dwt dual-fuel mid-range tankers. A new study suggests that #greenhousegas (GHG) reductions of up to 61% are now achievable from using #ammonia as a marine fuel, depending on the marine technology employed. This figure is compared with the emissions of current oil-based marine fuels measured from well-to-wake (WtW). The study was carried out by Sphera, a provider of environmental, social and governance (#ESG) performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, for the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF - Leading safe maritime decarbonisation), conducted according to ISO - International Organization for Standardization standards. Methanol-fueled #vessels are on the water today, and more are on the way. The Methanol Institute tracks global methanol vessel announcements, which are highlighted here. Beginning with the launch of the Stena Germanica in 2015 and the introduction of 11 chemical tankers by Methanex Waterfront Shipping in 2016-2019, and now MI member CMA CGM order of six 15,000 TEU dualfuel methanol-powered containerships, and Ocean Network Express (ONE) #shipbuilding contracts with Hyundai Heavy Industries and Nihon Shipyard to construct five 13,700 teu vessels each, all for delivery in 2025.* As you will see here, there is a broad range of methanol-fueled vessels including pilot boats, tug/push boats, ferries, cruise ships, superyachts, crew transfer vessels, lift and multi-purpose ships.
