There are 556,000 people with pending cases in immigration court in Florida, and 80% of them lack legal representation to help them make their case. Deportation tears families and communities apart, and many people are sent back to places where their safety may be at risk. While the federal government provides lawyers for people who cannot afford one in criminal court, it does not do the same for people in immigration court. People deserve to be treated with fairness and due process, but right now, many people facing deportation are forced to navigate the complex U.S. immigration system alone against highly trained government lawyers, without anyone to explain their rights or to defend them. America's immigration laws are extraordinarily complex, making the price of admission high, unjust, and inhumane. Unlike criminal and family court proceedings, immigrants facing deportation in immigration court do not have a right to counsel if they cannot afford one. Those with representation are six times more likely to see a successful outcome. Immigrant Justice Corps works to both empower new lawyers and advocates to join the immigration field and address the urgent need for direct legal services. This is an eye-opening article from TRAC about the percentage of immigrants that are represented by attorneys in immigration court. I'm glad to see that immigrants in Minnesota seem to fare better than those in other states (MN is in the top 10 for percentage of immigrants that are represented) - but some of these other figures are hard to grasp. A backlog of almost 3.3 million cases? As of Dec. 2023, only 30% of immigrants have legal representation? Pretty wild.
