America's immigration laws are extraordinarily complex, making the price of admission high, unjust, and inhumane. Unlike criminal and family court proceedings, immigrants facing deportation in immigration court do not have a right to counsel if they cannot afford one. Those with representation are six times more likely to see a successful outcome. Immigrant Justice Corps works to both empower new lawyers and advocates to join the immigration field and address the urgent need for direct legal services. Crossing the border from Mexico (or being suspected of it) is now a state crime in Texas that could immediately land you in jail. Texas Governor Greg Abbot signed into law a bill (SB4) last week that makes it a state crime to illegally cross the border from Mexico. Some of these immigrants will be asylum seekers who have the legal right to seek asylum in the United States regardless of how they entered the country or may be in the process of doing so. Why should we support the advocates and the civil rights groups coalition challenging it in court. 1. SB4 is unconstitutional because immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility. This law will create a precedent and situation where every border state can create its own immigration laws. 2. It puts the safety of immigrant adults and their children at risk. Without legal protections, they will be at greater risk of arbitrary arrest and separation from their families. 3. Many immigrants with legal status and U.S.-born citizens may also be more vulnerable to racial profiling, as police have the authority to arrest anyone they suspect. As a result it hurts immigrant families, Latinos, and other people of color in the state. I grew up in Texas and there are two things you must know to understand the impact this law will have throughout the state: 1) In many areas, the overwhelming majority of people are Hispanics and/or immigrants and 2) Many individuals and families have lives on both sides of the border and go back and forth frequently — sometimes every day. #ImmigrationLaw #SouthernBorder
