The term physician retention is self-explanatory. So, what are strategies to accomplish it? First, what's the value of retaining your physician workforce long-term? What's the cost of onboarding a new physician, and what's the cost of having a burnt-out physician run your practice? For each medical group, the answers will vary. Now that you know the numbers, it should be easy to figure out how much revenue you're willing to lose weekly to keep your physicians happy. Offering a higher hourly rate is almost never the answer. $120 vs. $130 or $350 vs. $420 might attract a couple of docs, but their performance will still be lackluster if they sign on or are retained because of pay. #1 Support. #2 Autonomy #3 Freedom Support them by giving the best support staff possible and take all prescribing, surgering, and admin hurdles. Your physicians need autonomy to schedule vacations to overbook and cancel patients. They need their schedules to vary throughout the week to support their social commitments. And your docs need the freedom to practice medicine the way they see fit. If their practice style is the problem you may have just hired the wrong MD/DO for your particular practice. Once onboard, and if they are competent, freedom to practice is key. #retention #phyisician #healthcare
