❓ Has “Scan the QR Code” replaced “Go to the Website” as a career fair 'toxic practice'? Every year at this time, since it was first published in the August 2016 NACE Journal, I have posted a link [I'll drop in Comments] to this Op-Ed I wrote: “Career Fairs are NOT Dead”. Simply stated, although the technology has certainly evolved, the cause-and-effect of the career fair experience remains constant: if students get “blown off” [their term] by recruiters directing them to scan their resume to a QR code and/or to visit their website in lieu of a ‘genuine conversation’, that telegraphs disinterest in them – at best. 👉 Here’s how I concluded the 2016 Op-Ed: “What I find intriguing is that the more we introduce technology into the recruitment toolkit, the more value students place on the type of face-to-face interactions that occur at career fairs”.  It’s eight years later, and I wouldn’t change a word. 👈

Discoveries at Algonquin’s ICT Career Fair: Insightful Moments by the Nokia Stand Algonquin College transformed into a tech hub today with its ICT career fair, uniting eight trailblazing companies with students passionate about technology's future. As I explored the event, I found myself drawn to the buzz at the Nokia booth. There, Linda Krebs led a series of insightful Q&A sessions. Even as an observer, the answers provided to my peers' questions struck a chord. Linda’s emphasis on creating a standout CV through problem-solving projects resonated with me, stressing that our contributions need not be grandiose to be meaningful. This dialogue sparked reflection on my recent project, the "Live Orbital Tracker," a web app that monitors the ISS's journey across the sky. It's been a personal challenge and a testament to the power of learning through doing. With Linda’s advice in mind, I’m inspired to take it further. Enriching the app with educational outreach or interactive elements could be just the kind of distinctive work that sets one apart.
