This is such a somber infographic and it is remarkable that the data can be compiled like that. I have seen a lot of commentary on here this past week about trying to get to the bottom of suicide rates in the military and/or resources (old and new) for veterans in crisis. My take? Research from my MPA program led me to look into these tragic statistics. Military members are a complex microcosm of society and many, many members enlist with unresolved ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences). If you are unfamiliar with ACE, this could be abuse, divorce, witnessing violence, etc before the age of 18. The research also indicated that more women with ACEs than men with ACEs are likely to join the military (and suicide of female veterans is at an all time high). ACEs for our generation of members/veterans are not completely new (aside from a generation of kids who have witnessed more gun violence than any previous generation), it is just that unresolved ACEs compounded with the intense stress of military life and/or combat trauma can put someone in a tremendously dark place. Unfortunately, our predecessors in the military established the stigma around seeking care for mental health and that still has residual effects (namely hesitancy to seek therapy because of a fear of leadership finding out/ending your career if they do). I wish I could have researched this further in my program. I also wish the military would help cover services such as BetterHelp, that could follow a service member (and their family) as they PCS and have continuity of care all without fear of military interference. #militaryveterans #takecareofyourpeople #enough

Lived Experience - Many military members state that something as simple as, “Hey dude – what’s up w/ you?” can pull them out of those emotional nosedives – which begs the question – if that’s all it takes – where do we get off shrugging our shoulders, saying that it’s a shame and moving on with our day? Another common bit of (mostly) universal information: Veterans typically won’t listen to people that don’t have practical experience in the matters affecting us. Simply put – Veterans typically listen to other Veterans.   Compiling all of this information, and adding in the fact that most Veterans, after leaving the service, are searching for a “Eudemonic Purpose” – not realizing that’s what they are missing from their previous military service. A “Eudemonic Lifestyle” is found when the subject leads a virtuous life and has negative feelings assuaged because their endeavors are fulfilling not just financially and practically – but emotionally and spiritually.   #techfortroops T4T Game Corps has combined all of these factors in our “Aiming For Zero” campaign. This should be a cause for concern for every American... the amount of and increase in suicides over this time period is sobering in and of itself. However, starting around Jul 2016 suicide became the leading cause of active duty military deaths, greater than accidents or even combat (hostile actions). We need to be doing more to take care of those that are protecting our country. The good news is healing is possible! This is why E.
