Check out my first ever #InfoIntegrity analysis. ⬇️🤯 🤓🔎 #TikTokBan The bigger story here for me comes from Rep. Sara Jacobs, D-Calif. “Not a single thing that we heard in today’s classified briefing was unique to TikTok. It was things that happen on every single social media platform.” More on that in a minute, but this is an important contextual lens to this story from my perspective. 📌 Now, THIS story. The bill passed 352-65 with a forthcoming "uphill" Senate vote and a verbal confirmation of the bill's signing should it hit POTUS's desk. Amid an election season, this thing has velocity so I'm expecting some interesting market responses as senators posture on their votes. 🍿 Unpacking YEAs and NAYs. ✅ Those voting yes have a pretty clear stance (with varying degrees of motivation), they're worried about possible breach of integrity in data, business, and the political process. After #CambridgeAnalytica and the Bipartisan Policy Center reporting 4/5 voters losing trust in the democratic process across both major parties, that fear is palpable—especially when you take into context the note to start the thread from Rep. Sara Jacobs. Not touching the geopolitics of this on either side of the vote. 😇 ❌ Among the nays is the free enterprise and free speech crowd. But among them are also elected officials' constituencies whose livelihoods could be significantly impacted by legislation. CBS News reports of the 170 million American users on #TikTok, 7 million are smaller businesses. I feel how horrifying it must be for these people to potentially losing a valued marketing asset with no fault of their own. ❌ Coming back to Sara Jacobs (D-51), the NAY vote draws attention to the larger question of how we're applying similar scrutiny and care to other #SocialMedia companies. And if there is an insidious motivation to the data powerhouse of TikTok, is that present in some of the other tech giants who have, for the most part, evaded strong and purposeful oversight. Not to mention, removing a global competitor from the American market gives these companies that much more of the market share. Zooming out 🏔 Brands and marketers face an uphill battle of their own as they see where things land on TikTok, and the cascading effects that are to come thereafter. I'd be interested to see if some mitigated against this and if YouTube shorts and others see a surge. 💼 Health and well-being is also a noteworthy factor. Research is starting to reveal how these platforms provide health information (for better or worse) to communities at scale. What happens if an exodus is required? And what's next for future social + #HealthTech in a world of #misinformation and data mismanagement? ❤️ 🌱 #HIMSS24 The list goes on. And as it does, we can't afford to be complacent on the conversation with so much at stake. #Marketers have a role to play and it's time we stepped up. Countries governments vs. social media companies; This shows the power and reach of social media companies, yet they dont have the structure, monitoring and control of a country's government.

Misinformation via political ads is a huge problem. Each platform takes a different stance on where their liability and ethical obligations begin and end. Should you be worried about TikTok’s future? In short, yes. There are some very real and practical concerns about the potential impact such a popular social network can have on American interests when it’s owned by a foreign company whose government is seemingly at odds with the US. Not only is data privacy a concern, the fact is, many TikTok users today use the app as their primary source of news and information. And for all our angst about the news outlets and bias that happens in the way news is presented by TV stations, newspapers, radio and other media – their issues pale in comparison to a media platform that has no central structure, ownership, oversight, or visibility. The key is to look at who has been the most vocal – and this is true about any potential issue you’re looking into. Because the unfortunate truth is that in order for someone to make a big deal about something, they have to be motivated to do so. And when it comes to politicians in Washington D.C., their motivations are clouded at best. I know that may come off as sounding jaded – and perhaps I am, having studied American history and been active in politics & campaigning for years – but democracy is never as simple as listening to your constituents and voting however the majority seem to prefer. I wish it was that simple. Politics would then be more science than art. The reality is that politicians certainly do need to talk to and listen to their constituents, but they also need to find ways to work with other politicians, weight the pros and cons of any particular course of action, and look for opportunities to be on the “right” side of public opinion in the eyes of their electorate. It’s complicated and murky – to say nothing about the potential for bad actors throughout. My point is that as businesses and marketers, we have to understand that TikTok’s ownership, access, and influence, aren’t merely national security issues or privacy concerns. They’re political concerns. Right now, politicians who are taking increasingly strong stances against TikTok and Bytedance are being seen by their voters as being strong and principled and patriotic. Not all voters agree on the issue or how to solve it of course, and Republican voters tend to feel more strongly about curtailing TikTok than Democrat voters, which is why we saw the Republican-led House of Representatives able to pass legislation that appears to be in doubt within the Democrat-led Senate. I’m not worried that TikTok will be banned, but I’m very concerned about how the platform is being framed and used by politicians. I’m worried that it’s being used to distract from more important issues that aren’t as electable. I’m worried that there’s little regard for the long term ramifications of these threats. And I’m worried that there might actually be wrongdoing on the part of some platforms, but that lawmakers will overlook it in their zeal for more press-worthy and consumer-digestible findings. 🔎 My latest #OSINT investigation with Max R. at ISD (Institute for Strategic Dialogue): We uncovered a network of 26 web domains, 10 websites, 15 Facebook pages, and 13 Facebook groups – all created since March 2023 – called the "Patriots Run Project," which is "focused on organizing real conservative Americans to run for office and save America." The pages/groups were violating Meta's coordinated inauthentic behavior policy and spent $48k on nearly 1,000 political ads on Facebook and Instagram in the last year. We found no records anywhere that Patriots Run Project is a registered business entity, tax-exempt organization, or political action committee (PAC). In one case, their campaign to recruit candidates actually worked. A libertarian credited the fake group for his congressional campaign. POLITICO covered our investigation with additional reporting. When they reached out to Meta for comment, the platform took down all pages/groups for violating its coordinated inauthentic policy and said that there were even more pages, groups, and accounts tied to Patriots Run Project that were also taken down. Meta said they shared the information with other tech companies and will share more details in its next transparency report in August. Do you think TikTok should be banned? Because I don't. Like millions of other young people, I have used the platform to give a voice to a generation that would otherwise feel unheard. More specifically, I have made political education and journalism accessible to a wide audience and have been invited to the White House, met renowned scholars, and collaborated with the biggest brands to translate important civic education into a format young people can understand. Other friends of mine like Joel Bervell have described sharing information about health and wellness that has literally saved the lives of his audience members. On top of this, a TikTok ban would be a severe blow to my livelihood and that of millions of small business owners just like me who thrive from having a wide, public presence. The Congress members who are pushing a TikTok ban in the House are out of touch with the realities of how important this app is for young Americans. As the American Civil Liberties Union puts it, "our leaders are once again attempting to trade our First Amendment rights for cheap political points during an election year” If you agree with me, tell your Congressperson not to vote in favor of the TikTok ban. This is Nationwide!~A bill that could lead to a TikTok ban is gaining momentum in Congress. ~Here's what to know: 🇺🇸 Washington—A renewed push targeting TikTok is gaining momentum on Capitol Hill, where several previous efforts to ban the widely popular video-sharing app over concerns about its parent company's ties to China have stalled in the past. Owned by the China-based company ByteDance, TikTok is one of the most widely used apps in the U.S., with more than 150 million monthly users. Its meteoric rise over the past several years has been accompanied by warnings from national security officials and lawmakers that China's communist government could gain access to its vast trove of data and use that information to spy on Americans. Why does Congress want to ban TikTok? Lawmakers from both parties have repeatedly expressed concerns that TikTok could be forced to hand over the data it collects on millions of American users to the Chinese government, which could in turn use it for espionage purposes. They have also warned that the app could be used to spread propaganda and misinformation. "America's foremost adversary has no business controlling a dominant media platform in the United States. TikTok's time in the United States is over unless it ends its relationship with CCP-controlled ByteDance," Gallagher said in a statement announcing the legislation, referring to the Chinese Communist Party. Is TikTok going to be banned? It's too soon to say. The bill would still need to pass both the House and the Senate, and be signed into law by the President. If it does become law, ByteDance would have six months to sell before any ban would take effect. Lawmakers who support the legislation say they don't consider it to be a ban on TikTok, since it could continue to operate in the U.S. if ByteDance divests. Krishnamoorthi said the bill presents "a choice for ByteDance." "We implore ByteDance to sell TikTok," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters, saying the bill would ensure everyone "ownership isn't in the hands of those who may do us harm or no good. This is about our national security, obviously." "Once it gets to a place on legal standing, & it can get out of Congress, then the President would sign it. Dozens of States have also banned the platform on government-issued devices, leading a number of public universities to restrict access to TikTok on campus to comply with those laws. The US has moved one step closer to banning TikTok following concerns over data privacy and national security. And it's not just the video-sharing app under the microscope - Big Tech giants like Meta and Google are facing scrutiny too.
