Lhoist Central Europe places great emphasis on environmental protection and the implementation of technologies that allow for the capture of CO₂ generated during the lime calcination process. 💨 A group of representatives from the lime, cement, and energy industries of Poland, visited Norway to learn about the experiences and offerings of the Norwegian side in the field of CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) technologies. The Polish Lime Association (Stowarzyszenie Przemysłu Wapienniczego) was represented by its President Marcin Jan Leszczyński who is also the Operational Director of Lhoist Central Europe. During the visit, the group met with representatives from research organizations such as SINTEF (Bergen) and Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM), which is the world’s largest post-combustion CO₂ capture test center. These centers focus on testing and validating technologies of carbon capture from flue gases, further processing them, and considering their potential geological sequestration under the North Sea. The team also visited the construction site of the CCUS installation Northern Lights JV Lights, which is scheduled to be operational in 2024. #Sustainability #CCUSTechnology #Innovation #Collaboration

UK CCS Update! Wintershall Dea has increased its CCS presence in the UK by acquiring a 10% interest in Poseidon CCS from Carbon Catalyst Limited. The Poseidon CCS Project is expected to have a total storage capacity of 1 giga tonne of CO2 and start operation by 2029. With this deal, the company now participates in 5 CO2 storage projects in the North Sea, including licences in Norway, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. We estimate Wintershall Dea’s CCS portfolio in the North Sea has a Levelized Cost of Storage (LCOS) between 20 to 27 US$/te at 10% discount rate. Majority owner BASF is reportedly considering selling its stake in Wintershall Dea.

#CCS updates from France 🔵 ⚪ 🔴 The ECO2-Normandy consortium, which aims to develop Carbon Capture and transport infrastructure in the Normandy industrial basin, is welcoming HAROPA PORT to its ranks. Haropa Port will bring its experience and know-how in port and logistics activities to the consortium's project. ECO2-Normandy aims to reduce the basin's CO2 emissions by up to 3 million tons per year, equivalent to the emissions of more than 500,000 people. The ECO2-Normandy consortium seeks to implement a CO2 capture and transport chain from industrial activities for final storage in the North Sea. After confirming its technical feasibility in the first stage of the studies, the project has progressed to a new phase, which will see preparatory engineering studies carried out. This strategic project, which remains open to new members, will be able to call on European, French, and regional funding. Its current participants include ExxonMobil en France, Air Liquide, LAT Nitrogen, TotalEnergies and Yara International. The North West Redwater Partnership has devised a bitumen processing solution in Alberta that not only maximizes the value of raw materials by generating ultra-low sulfur fuels but also integrates a carbon capture and storage (CCS) system. Through gasification, the refinery converts heavy bottoms, a significant bitumen waste product, into hydrogen for operations and a pure, dry CO2 stream. This captured CO2, amounting to approximately 70% of the refinery's total CO2 emissions, is cost-effectively stored and sold for enhanced oil recovery and permanent storage. The captured CO2 serves as a pivotal supply to the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line (ACTL), the world's largest system for capturing, transporting, utilizing, and storing industrial CO2, offering a substantial investment in CO2 management for Alberta's industrial development, designed concurrently with the Sturgeon Refinery. Although California refineries already produce over a million metric tons a year of hydrogen using steam methane reforming, that is called Grey Hydrogen since the CO2 byproduct is released into the atmosphere. Several Blue Hydrogen plants are under development. Blue Hydrogen is produced with methane or non-methane steam reforming where the CO2 byproduct is either utilized or sequestered. A few Green Hydrogen plants are also under development. Green Hydrogen is produced by decomposition of water, generally by electrolysis. Blue and Green Hydrogen production, liquefaction, storage, transportation, and fueling stations subject employees and the public to substantial safety risks that require complex engineered mitigation. This is an opportunity for SPE members to transition from traditional oil and gas to new energy development.
