Start-ups hiring your first Security Engineer... Here are a few tips I have from my experience over the last 12 years: 💭 Take time to really understand what it is you need this person to achieve. Security Engineers come in all shapes and sizes and job descriptions with every technology and compliance standard possible on them won't help you find the best person. Be specific and think how this role aligns to wider business objectives. ⏳ Great Security Engineers aren't easy to find and you need to set expectations that finding them through your internal teams or traditional methods is going to take some time. Data suggests that first Security hires take an average of 6 months to hire (this could be a whole other post) 🧑💻 Your first Security Engineer will obviously need great technical skills, but it's also important that they fit into the culture of the business and understand the wider objectives. Many companies struggle to find Security Engineers with the right mix of technical and communication skills and this can lead to a costly mis-hire. 👋 Working with expert recruiters in this space really helps. Whether that's me or any of the other great recruiters in our industry, our job is to speak to great candidates every day and understand the market nuances that will save you time and money in the long run allowing your internal TA teams to focus on core business roles. I had a message from a recent grad in Cybersecurity this week asking why nobody will give them a Security Engineer interview. In order to break into security, you have to get to the point that you wouldn't be value minus in a security team. With very few exceptions, security teams are understaffed, underbudgeted and overworked. Most CISOs at best get to do a fraction of the ideal activities to reduce security risk, and with careers and livelihoods on the line, most aren't willing to make take on development debt that reduce the operational output of their teams. That difference over the course of a year could mean a wildly different future for his/her family. If you want a job in security, you have to build a resume that takes you at least from negative to neutral impact, which means knowing basic technical skills picked up in things like software engineering, system administration or network engineering. For example, if you are a wiz at scripting APIs, you could balance the debt impact of your development by helping that security team automate a bunch of processes. For the vast majority of people, the best route to security straight out of college is going into a non-security technical role to learn the basics, and then transitioning into the security team internally. There's no lottery with these things. It's all graft and laying foundational skills. Follow us at #SHcyberjobs

The job title bias is a real thing, and both candidates and employers are missing out. Why a job title and your CV can prevent you from getting an interview. What?! – I thought CVs only purpose is to help me have an interview? A bit contradicting, isn’t it? Here’s a situation from this week. Candidate reaches out to me asking about new opportunities, and shared CV titled EUC Engineer – setting up a scene before I even opened it. I am having a quick look- Profile says 10 years’ experience- Technical Support 2nd and 3rd line - the usual skills for Microsoft environment, AD/Win Servers/Autopilot/Intune/Defender/PowerShell says cloud only, but I can already guess it is Azure. Pretty straightforward right? Then work history- last 3 job titles Modern Workplace Engineer, IT Engineer, Desktop Engineer overview consistent with above… Most people in IT, probably like you right now (and me then), would feel confident to assume they know exactly what type of a professional this is and what roles could be suitable. But something did not feel right – I am not advertising a role like that– we are not connected to the same people- why has this candidate reached out to me? Was he referred by one of my colleagues or clients? Did we work together in a past? I got curious. I called to discuss - Very quickly I have realised, how big disservice this CV was doing to this candidate. It turns out, all above job titles mentioned, where because he worked within a fresh, new IT team, for 2 BioTech, and 1 CleanTech start up- their setup did not have Senior/Manager in their structure yet, because it was not needed- he was the only IT team member at that time. I think to myself, now I know, why you have contacted me, and we had a discussion about experience. He was designing and setting up a whole IT infrastructure. Hands on preparing HLD/LLD, integrating various SaaS applications, bringing vendors on board, writing policies/controls around all that, and implementing it too. WOW, what a twist. Furthermore, the BioTech roles were for highly regulated Pharma manufacturing sites with laboratories and Cleanrooms, with Bio Reactors and huge number of sensitive instruments. And at the role for CleanTech company, this candidate designed whole IT function for Global operation with over 1000 devices across multiple continents. Here is some unique value proposition! Suddenly from a crowd of a 100 000s professionals, feels like this candidate is 1 in a 1000s, maybe even 100s in the UK. Initially, CV did not convey this at all - but now it does.
