We’re thrilled to announce that we’re headed to SXSW 2024! Our session, titled “The Brave New Future of the Recent Past: Archiving Digital Collections,” submitted with our colleagues from the The New York Public Library, the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has been selected as part of the SXSW Conference Program! AEA’s Hilary Knight alongside Keir Winesmith (NFSA), Tasha James (ABC) and Brent Reidy (NYPL) will be discussing the challenges and limitations of archiving digital and indigenous culture. While screen-based media is today’s dominant cultural form, as a field, we generally lack the tools, technology and expertise required to adequately collect and preserve contemporary culture for the future. Concurrently, digitisation and preservation of Indigenous culture, knowledges and metadata is vital to ensuring that Indigenous stories are stored and told authentically and appropriately. Drawing from work across disciplines, the discussion will outline the complexities, challenges and potential solutions that exist in this space. Thanks Slush for a great opportunity to watch it remotely. Yet I miss its fantastic atmosphere. So, 5:52, Severin Hacker, co-founder and CTO, Duolingo. Key points for me: 1️⃣ Duolingo operates with a mission-driven focus, which has contributed to its success but has also brought about challenges in determining a viable business model. Similar to what happened to Spotify, what to place behind a paywall was a head scratcher. 2️⃣ Back in 2012, they kicked off with a website that was described as "nothing magical but a good product." Next move? Mobile app time. Initially, they predicted that only 5% of the user base would hop on board. Surprise, surprise! Within 1-2 weeks after the app launch, the entire user base had shifted to the mobile platform. 3️⃣ Zero-dollar revenue for 4 years before introducing subscriptions in 2016. With a decision to not put the content behind the paywall but cash in with a feature-based subscription. 4️⃣ AI goal serves the mission - to provide an individual touch of learning for a massive audience. 5️⃣ Insights for building a partnership for the long term, two cofounders with equal shares, one was a tutor and the other was a student, are still in the boardroom. The International Conference on Game Jams, Hackathons, and Game Creation Events (ICGJ) is happening in an actual, non-virtual place this year! ▶️ MeDeMAP is on Youtube! Throughout the first year of the project, we have developed several audiovisual materials in collaboration with all our partners. During our third project meeting, in Lisbon in March 2024, we recorded statements from team members and the researchers, teachers and journalists present at the roundtable. We also took this opportunity to record the first set of podcasts and videocasts that will help us to unravel some of the issues covered by the project and the work that is being carried out. The content will be available in two formats - videocast and podcast - on Youtube, Spotify and other platforms. Alongside our website and social networks, we will present in-depth reflections and important debates about Europe today, the democratic state in european countries and the current panorama of the media All in the light of the theoretical research and practical work that researchers and experts have been carrying out as part of the MeDeMAP project - Mapping Media For Future Democracies.
