🌿 Ammonia Value Chain and Market Outlook 🌿 Hydrogen is poised to replace natural gas demand in Germany in the long term. However, the majority of the required #hydrogen is expected to be imported. #Ammonia (NH3) is a crucial hydrogen carrier, facilitating efficient energy transport over long distances and at large scales. NH3 can be transported via ship or pipeline using well-established technologies. It can be cracked into hydrogen at the destination, either centrally or decentrally, to produce renewable hydrogen or be directly used as an energy carrier, for instance, in NH3 turbines to provide electricity and heat on a large scale. EnBW is actively engaged across the entire NH3 value chain. Notable projects include SkyGa (green NH3 from Norway), Project AZAN (a large-scale NH3 cracker in Rostock) together with VNG AG and JERA Co., Inc. and our research acitivities with Institut für Feuerungs- und Kraftwerkstechnik, Universität Stuttgart. Hydrogen Valley of Catalonia, is a strategic regional initiative comprising more than 180 companies, 40 public institutions, 22 associations and clusters, 4 chambers of commerce and 14 research and education centers. The main industrial hub of the valley is located in Tarragona, leveraged on the largest chemical hub in Southern Europe; the mobility and R&D activities are developed in Barcelona, with a major logistics platform for Mediterranean region, and Tarragona. The valley is part of European Hydrogen Backbone and has the ambition to lead the renewable hydrogen development in Southern Europe through interregional initiatives like the Ebro Hydrogen Valley.   The leading industrial project of the valley is a hydrogen production plant of 1 GW capacity by 2030, with a first stage of 150 MW by 2026. The European Commission, in a significant move, has approved the fourth Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) on hydrogen, titled "IPCEI Hy2Move". This transformative initiative, backed by €1.4 billion in state aid from seven Member States, is set to revolutionize the hydrogen value chain by integrating hydrogen technologies into transport applications. It's a crucial step towards achieving the EU's climate-neutral targets by 2050, and we are excited to share this development with you, our esteemed stakeholders. IPCEI Hy2Move will cover a broad spectrum of hydrogen technology innovations, including: - Developing hydrogen-powered transport applications for road, maritime, and aviation sectors. - Creating high-performance fuel cell technologies. - Advancing next-generation on-board hydrogen storage solutions. - Producing 99.99% pure hydrogen for mobility and transport. This collaborative effort involves 11 companies and numerous SMEs and is expected to generate over 3,600 direct jobs. It represents Europe's commitment to the Green Deal and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy. Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President in charge of competition policy, aptly stated, "The IPCEI Hy2Move is an example of truly ambitious European cooperation for a key common objective."
