Unveiling Stories Woven in Fabric: The Silozi Attire of Zambia’s Western Province🇿🇲In every thread and pattern, African fabrics tell stories of culture, identity, and heritage. The Silozi attire, originating from Zambia's Western Province, is more than just a piece of clothing, it's a narrative woven through generations.Rich in color and intricate in design, the Silozi fabric speaks to the traditions and values of the Lozi people. Each motif and hue carries significance, from the deep blues and reds symbolizing the waters and sunsets of the Zambezi floodplains to the geometric patterns that echo the unity and resilience of the Lozi culture.Wearing Silozi attire is like donning a piece of history,a story of a people who have thrived by the riverbanks, maintaining their customs while embracing the new. A #craft gains its #color shades through the phases of moon rotation? Sounds Weird! No, it is in real for a craft that has been practiced for last 2000-years in #Mayan #Culture. A group of Mayan #weavers in San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala is fighting to sustain this rare craft for themselves and their families. A form of #tiedye, the #weaving was re-started in 1988 by these #women when they lost grandfathers, fathers, brothers and sons in Guatemalan civil war. As a result, the women across our #communities united and decided to use their #skills as weavers to support themselves and their families. As a part of Trama #Textiles Cooperative, it has given them a sense of purpose and #empowerment and enabled the possibility of a brighter #future. Weaving is centuries-old Maya #art which remains a fundamental part of Mayan identity today. Across Guatemala, each Maya town has its own unique traje (#traditional #dress) which distinguishes it from another. Some of the pieces worn by the women are so intricate they can take months to make. Despite their expertise, as many of our weavers don’t speak #Spanish, they are often forced to sell their products to middlemen for very low prices. In other words: making a living from their indigenous craft is very challenging. This is when Trama Textiles helped them to communicate in their own Maya dialects, and helped weavers to get livelihood and respect. Today through this intervention they get #fairwage and a reliable source of #income for the women in Mayan communities, helping to survive in the regions where work is hard to find. “Carmen” Bar Cabinet by Comité de Proyectos The sentinels Ramón, Vilma and Carmen personify one of the most transcendent, instinctive acts that living beings have the pleasure of experiencing: caring and being cared for. In caring, one weaves an intimate relationship with the other that transcends one’s own needs. This relationship is nurtured over time and is an act of mutual responsibility. It is not possible to care without listening to the needs of the other, it requires empathy and recognition. Our collection is an ode to the act of caring and we do it through these ornamented characters. For this, we use artisanal processes such as carved wood and hand-turned metal parts, respecting the nature of the materials. The result is highly detailed objects that convey warmth. Given that care has been for years an activity attributed only to women, we seek to transcend the gender barrier by proposing an alternative to the paradigm under which we operate. These pieces arise from a series of reactions to gender violence and seek to raise awareness of the way in which we relate to each other and our surroundings. Jamdani is the most beautiful fabric. It reminds of what fairies would wear - breezy, almost ethereal, and so delicate. The revival of it, the handwoven cotton or silk fabric from Bangladesh that was the pinnacle of fashion for centuries, is a story of cultural success - and an example of what happens when you put the work in to make art actually work for artists. Third Thursday of May is Vyshyvanka Day, when Ukrainians around the world are wearing our traditional embroidered cloth as a symbol of unity and respect of our heritage. A few fun facts: 💙Vyshyvankas (the word means “embroidered”) date back probably as far as the Bronze age. There are numerous archeological artefacts showing that our ancient ancestors embroidered their clothes. The tradition survived the arrival of Christianity in the late 900s, numerous attempts of assimilation and, amazingly, the totalitarian communist regime. 💛 The embroidery is highly symbolic and is believed to grant the wearer protection and good fortune. Each region of Ukraine has its own style of embroidery that is transmitted through oral tradition. The most ubiquitous are geometric and floral motives and red, black and white colours. 💙 Vyshyvankas could be a symbol of sustainable fashion. They are made from natural textiles (the most popular is linen, but wool was also used) and were traditionally embroidered with silk or wool thread. It usually took about a year to complete one garment, which was kept for life, worn on many occasions and often passed on to children. In some regions of Ukraine there is a tradition to bury the elders in the same vyshyvankas they were married in, so “they can stand before God” in their best attire. 💛 Vyshyvanka Day is a grassroots tradition. It was started in 2006 by high school students and teachers in Tchernyvtsi and quickly spread around the country and diaspora. It is not a public holiday, it is just what we do as people. 💙 You can wear vyshyvanka if you’re not Ukrainian. We do not consider it cultural appropriation, but rather a form of solidarity. However, if you are buying a vyshyvanka, avoid knock-offs and support Ukrainian brands and creators. Vyshyvankas are made to be family heirlooms, they are not cheap fast fashion. As I am wearing my traditional clothes today, I acknowledge the fact that this is a privilege not accessible to everyone. All of us should be free to show who we are, where our roots are without the fear of intimidation, violence or oppressive laws. I hope we get to the day when we can display our identity not in denial or competition with the identities of the others, but in solidarity. #vyshyvankaday
