I was reading this article on Light Reading that Verizon is exploring for potential buyer to sell 5000 to 6000 cell towers but it turned out 500,000 to 600,000USD offered per tower is too low compared to Shentel and PG&E deals that fetched 1.4M USD per tower years back. It is uncanny to benchmark such developed infrastructure market like North America but the trend worth watching-why the industry giants like Verizon are taking that route? In separate story, about three years back when the incumbent operator's valuation figures flew around the corner , out of pure patriotism 😄 and some sentimental attachment of course 😍 I tried to quickly assess African infrastructure market using open sources such as TowerXchange . Going through 9 years'(2010 to 2019) tower transaction data (over 30,000 towers) and found out a tower cost 215K to 250K depending on year and size of the transaction. Morale of the story, going solo to infrastructure development is expensive endeavor. Build together and share-the end goal is to optimally catalyze the digital economy.

The question remains: Will this colossal sum be enough to bridge the digital divide? Last week, I discussed the value of a tenant lease to a tower company. This week, I’m providing an assessment of a cell tower asset's worth to a tower company. This valuation differs from that of a lease. Typically, a property owner who owns the tower structure can secure a higher multiple than they would for a ground lease. While not exact, this offers insight into the valuation process. The more tenants a tower has, the higher its value due to increased cash flow. Therefore, property owners have greater negotiation leverage when a tower hosts more tenants. It's crucial for property owners to identify the tenants on their tower before negotiating. FWIW, I agree with the headline quote, but not the business plan presented here. Digital infrastructure is one of the key issues of the 21st century. China is succeeding in capturing the hardware industries & supply chains on which the internet depends. It’s as important for the USA to produce clean tech hardware as weapons & munitions… but that isn’t happening. Instead Western multinationals are playing nice with CCP controlled entities across a growing list of imperial transshipment hubs while claiming to be diversifying away from China. USA doesn’t even produce enough tech hardware to meet our own basic digital needs — much less that of our Allies & partners. China’s conquest of the digital realm may look different than territorial conquest, but it’s no less consequential. “We saw that during COVID; if you were not connected you were not part of our society.” Whether they realize it or not, the Davos crowd is selling out what’s left of the free world. Hard to see how these opportunists & useful idiots win in the long run. More is not always better.
