After more than 11 years at Philip Morris International, of which 10 years were outside of Mexico City, I have made the decision to close a great professional cycle in my life. During these past months, in which I took possibly one of the most difficult decisions in my life—since PMI puts you in a very high comfort zone on looking for other alternatives as it is an amazing employer—one of the many questions I was asked was if I was thinking of putting PMI completely on a side and selling my PMI stocks, to which my answer was a resounding NO. I share this because behind this resounding response is what it really meant to work at PMI all these years. PMI is the first company where I can say that I had great mentors who opened my perspective multiple times; leaders who challenged and made me uncomfortable to bring out in me what I never imagined I had; colleagues who showed me the true meaning of the power of teamwork, leaving me with great memories of overcoming challenges and achieving triumphs; and best of all, FRIENDS. I was always a person who thought that we are hired to work and not to make friends; PMI changed this, and it changed due to the amazing quality of people that this company has. Innovative, always willing to help, competitive, who constantly challenge the status quo, inclusive, risk-takers, caring; among many other things. All great companies offer you growth, benefits, recognition, experiences, but until now, I had not experienced being in an organisation that marked me for the value of its people. That said, the resounding NO to this question is because I know that this group of people will not only achieve the long-awaited smoke-free future, but because they will make Philip Morris International reach places that no one ever thought a tobacco product company would reach. Had a pleasure to exchange food for thought with many experienced and creative people from the industry. It never ceases to win me over - the energy and ambition of the BSS sector in Poland and it feels extra good to see JTI (Japan Tobacco International) GBS leading the game despite its young age. Thank you Pro Progressio and KPMG for the trust and invitation Few key call outs: * Łódź’s conscientiousness in attracting new and supporting existing investments seems to be founded on solid ground. The more I learn about this #city the more I’m impressed Adam Pustelnik 👏 * Positioning GBS in broader organization requires culture tailored #branding that might call for dropping the obvious tools (like CSat or BSS specific naming convention) - Magdalena Kowalska got my attention for more than 8 seconds :) 🎣 * No doubt GBS can initiate #changes in global organization but can we go beyond the already standard offering of improving process efficiency and tuning up operating model? Not sure but was interesting to listen to experience of Joanna Hrynenko-Dudek, Marek Smarkusz, LSS BB Philip Young FCMA, CGMA * The #future of #GBS in Poland seems to be bright given the to date trends (I.e. slow but steady increase in number of senior roles in Polish BSS sector) but I appreciated the call from Kamila Grembowicz for reinventing the value proposition and taking a realistic outlook on our competitiveness (declining in areas such as barriers-to-entry and labor arbitrage) 📈🚀 * Agnieszka Jarosz kept me glued to the seat with ACCA’s study showing how geographically focused risks will shape the learning trends (Europe will continue with its re- and up- skilling of talent not only to retain relevance of business value proposition but secure EVP; it came as no surprise that scoring high was also cyber security and in general, compliance) 🧑🏼🏫🧪🔐 The underlying message from all of the panels was CHANGE as an ever present factor, accelerating in its intensity due to macroeconomic events. I had a privilege to share my experience in an on stage power chat with Igor Siedlarski about what it takes for program to be successfully delivered. Enough to say that focus only on process and technology (prioritized in 90% of transformational initiatives) is a recipe for failure (or deferring costs at best). It’s hard to find PMs who are skilled at driving and managing change in the areas of process, technology AND people. It takes unique skills (empathy on steroids ;)) and most of all - practice, to get the last point right. We are (really!) lucky to have leadership that recognizes it Jay Desai Tom Greene Sustainable change in people area cannot be managed. It can be either led or influenced 🤷♀️ And how can it be done?
