I’m excited to share a preprint I had the privilege of coauthoring with an amazing group of economists, scientists, public health officials, and financial engineers from academic institutions and organizations in the US and EU. Our work focuses on the rapidly evolving landscape of science, innovation, and technology (SIT) in biomedicine and healthcare, highlighting the increasing recognition for a strategic overhaul of many existing practices. This necessity forms the crux of our current article entitled "Towards a Framework for a New Research Ecosystem.” The motivation behind our work stemmed from a critical observation: the pace at which biomedical and healthcare innovations are emerging is not always matched by the existing frameworks guiding research and development. This mismatch can pose significant challenges, ranging from funding hurdles to regulatory bottlenecks, impeding the swift translation of scientific discoveries into practical solutions. Our analysis began with identifying the core areas that require immediate attention. First and foremost is the challenge of financing. Innovative scientific projects, especially in biomedicine, are often perceived as high-risk ventures. To counter this, we propose novel financing strategies like Research-Backed Obligations (RBOs), designed to reduce investment risks and attract capital to high-potential projects. Another pivotal aspect is the need for enhanced cross-disciplinary collaboration. The complexity of modern biomedical research demands a convergence of diverse scientific disciplines. Our article highlights the importance of integrated labs and virtual collaboration platforms, which are essential for breakthroughs in areas like CRISPR technology and AI-powered biomedical research and development. We also emphasize the critical role of governments and public institutions in providing clear, supportive frameworks. Such support is crucial for catalyzing progress in advancing transformative therapies such as gene and cell-based treatments and addressing areas such as neurodegeneration. Lastly, we advocate for the evolution of regulatory and legal frameworks to accommodate the rapid development and ethical application of novel biomedical technologies and analytical methods. The aspiration of our collaborative work is to serve as a catalyst for global dialogue and inspire actionable insights in the community of stakeholders committed to maximizing the value of emerging biomedical tools of discovery. This collaboration has been a journey of intellectual rigor and shared commitment to advancing the frontiers of science. "Science isn't finished until it's communicated." That powerful quote by Mark Walport lit up the presentation screen yesterday morning at the conference "Unlocking the power of science communication in research and policy making." I used to use this quote regularly in presentations years ago too, but had somewhat lost sight of it. It provided the energy boost the conference coffee failed to give me. It was a truly inspiring and energizing conference day, with strong talks and panels. Congrats to Science Europe, Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen (FWO), and FRNS 👏 I very much enjoyed the views & energy provided by Alessandro Allegra & Joana Lobo Antunes 🙌 There are just too many insights to share in one post, but here are some I fully endorse: ✔️ In science, knowledge valorization is of utmost importance. But that term is too often interpreted in a narrow economic sense, in the context of tech transfer - monetizing innovations. Let's embrace the term much more broadly. The knowledge generated by science should serve society & its citizens at large, not just industry, but also schools, policymakers, civil society organisations, … 🤝 That being said, we need to update the social contract between science and society. Science for policy is central to this. Policy should be evidence-based; very much grounded in science. To achieve this, we need to foster exchange between scientists and policymakers. Both parties need insight and a better understanding of how each other's worlds work. ❗️Societal endeavor is pivotal for science. It’s not something that comes at the end of scientific research, on the contrary: it should be incorporated from the very beginning. 🔬 Yet, we also need to celebrate and communicate fundamental research; research that is not directly aimed at (direct) applications or producing ‘useful’ knowledge. It might very well pay off in the long run. Without fundamental research, we wouldn’t have GPS technology or the mRNA vaccines that helped us tame the COVID-19 pandemic. But most importantly, fundamental research is a celebration of what is at the heart of science and human nature: curiosity. Curious to find out what you took away from the conference 🤔

I'm proud to announce the release of a special issue I've had the privilege to serve as the Guest Editor with Wei chen in the Technology & Innovation journal, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Inventors. Where does the field of dissemination and implementation sit after two decades? In this paper, the authors assert the research-to-practice gap persists and propose a community-centered path forward to accelerate the field's objectives. They explores the different implementation roles (using the translational spectrum), the functions people serve in #impsci and #imppractice, and the processes of #implementation. The authors (including TCI's Julia Moore) also highlight opportunities to increase regular communication and engagement between individuals whose work sits at different points along the D&I translational science spectrum to close the research-to-practice gap. On the 12th of August (afternoon session), I’ll be hosting a session at the National Science Week Anti-Conference 🧪🔬 The event, geared toward engaging young adults in STEM, will take conference traditions and throw them out of the window! In my session, titled Contagious Curiosity: A Collaborative Journey through the Science of Infection, you will plan a research project for curing, controlling, or managing an absurd (and entirely imaginary) infectious disease. The virus, aptly named Melodic Chromatitis, causes the infected to break out into spontaneous singing (don’t worry, no actual singing will be required in this activity) and alters the pigmentation of their hair, turning it an iridescent shade of pink/purple. Melodic Chromatitis is rapidly spreading across the globe - modelling predicts 20% of the world’s population will be infected by Christmas. Whilst initially the symptoms seem light-hearted and entertaining, just imagine having to endure relentless, off-key, and poorly performed musical distractions day in and day out. And while agreeable to some, we simply cannot overlook the impact that pink and purple hair could have if our world leaders contract the virus! How could we ever take them seriously again? Would someone please consider the egos of our global dignitaries!! Efforts to find a cure, control the spread, or manage the symptoms of Melodic Chromatitis has become a priority for researchers at the Wesfarmers Centre for Vaccines and Infectious Diseases. With such an unfamiliar, unexpected, and curious virus, it has never been more important to involve those with a lived experience. Full disclosure, this activity requires you to suspend your disbelief and imagine life being infected with this ridiculous and fictitious disease. In return for such an onerous ask, you will gain insight into some medical research processes including sample size considerations, safety, risk and ethical factors, funding, and budgeting scrutiny and above all, an example of how taxpayers (that’s you) can have a say in how researchers use your tax money.
