My name is Forrest. I'm the Executive Producer, Stage Production at Insomniac. The nightly firework moment at EDC Las Vegas is unique. Every night, three different firework shows time coded to three different tracks that we broadcast across multiple stages so the headliners can hear the music and see the fireworks and coordination. Shock advised. Staff. Imagine a half mile that would be the back stretch between turn two and three. It's spread out all the different pyro decks pads that around 200 and 250 of them. And each one of those are linked up to a master computer and those are linked up to the different stages with all the music is time coded and queued. So very complex system. But with us shooting over, I believe it's somewhere in between 3000 and 3300 shells a night. The EDC Vegas fireworks shows the best fireworks show in Vegas. Having the real estate to be able to do fireworks show that big, having an amazing neighbor, no Air Force Base that encourages to blow things up. And it's Vegas, so we go till 5:30 in the morning. Like why wouldn't you have the best fireworks show at the best festival? For the pyro, the pyro on stage 1, the widest stage out of all the stages, it's 425 feet wide. So I would say there's 50 plus flame heads just for the different kinds of units. My favorite pyro moment would be the old base pod. We found this unit called Magma shoots 150 foot flame. Every time we hit it, the stage one would be telling us to stop hitting it because they looked like an atom bomb was going on. Each night a different show. That in itself right there. It takes a lot of time to get six to seven minute shows. Time coded to different music might be 18 minutes where the fireworks that you see, but it's probably seven months getting everything we want to see in the right order with the right drops on the music. Burn it to the crowd and the network to get everything from, you know, where everything launches up on the hill to all the stages. I mean, that's just the networking beast. EDC Vegas Fireworks show. It has a special place in my heart and I've been here a long time. Just, you know, to see it from the early days, even before the Colosseum at the Nos, we did EDC there. This show was only a couple of minutes, right? And then we went to LA. It was a couple more minutes, but we were able to do bigger things. And then to see it go to Vegas and then being able to do what we're able to do there is really special. That was fire. Do you wanna take it higher? When you get the one person to be like, hey, thank you, it means a lot. You know, I start crying emotional thing, you know, just to be able to bring that many people together and in one place for three days is a don't know where else that happens. You know, kind of wish it was a two weekend show. You look.

Forrest, this was great to hear. I'm a massive fireworks fan (even helped on a barge for the City of Long Beach with their pyro show a few years ago) and know EDC hosts the best fireworks display anywhere on earth. So much safety and planning goes into this. bravo! 👏

Our last day in Svalbard was unusually magical. On a Zodiac ride to view a beautiful glacier front, we encountered a mother polar bear and her two cubs. They started out just sleeping on the tundra at the edge of a bay. We watched quietly at a great distance of over 300 meters. Eventually, Mom got up and started walking the beach. The cubs followed, eventually slipping into the frigid waters and playing with each other. I've seen polar bears dive below the water surface before, but I've never seen a cub do it, nor for the time they spent doing so. This short video is footage I compiled of that special event. On a technical note, I shot more stills than video of this episode. I desperately wanted to shoot virtually all video, but it's normally impossible to capture video footage from a boat on the water, handheld, no less. But I knew this show was made for video. My concern was due to handholding a powerful telephoto zoom, the 150-400mm. Normally you would never shoot video with such a powerful telephoto lens unless you are on solid ground with the camera and lens attached to a tripod. It's generally impossible to handhold something this powerful and still get quality footage. But thankfully I was seriously impressed with what the OM-System OM-1 Mark ll allowed me to do with that lens. Hope you enjoy the video.
