Today we’re celebrating both International Women's Day 2024 and Women in Aviation Week! It’s a chance to celebrate our female colleagues and women within the aviation industry from pilots to first officers, cabin crew to ground staff, maintenance engineers and the many other valuable roles that make up our industry. Whilst female pilots are on the rise across the globe, they’re still an incredibly small number in comparison to the male population. Studies show that the main deterrents for young girls and women considering careers in aviation are a lack of mentorship, visibility of role models, associated costs, and exclusionary policies, amongst other factors. At Symbiotics, we’re proud to have a team of fantastic women who are helping to lead the way in providing assessment and selection, training and consultancy services in over 130 locations worldwide. We're also proud members of Women in Aviation International. Did you know that women make up just 6.4% of the global aviation industry? This statistic reflects the incredible journey we still have to ensure gender diversity and inclusion within the sector. I am a proud member of Women in Aviation, a global organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of women in all aviation career fields and interests. Our mission is not just about celebrating achievements; it's about breaking down barriers and opening doors for future generations. My aviation journey was fueled by a childhood dream to become a fast jet pilot. Despite being told repeatedly by teachers that this wasn't a career for a young lady, my stubbornness pushed me to pass the entrance exams to become a pilot with the British military. However, due to personal medical reasons, I discovered that I couldn't pursue a career as a fighter pilot. At that point, the idea of becoming a commercial pilot seemed distant, as I had never encountered a female first officer or captain. To this day, I have yet to fly with a female colleague on the flight deck. It's an honour and a privilege to work for Padpilot, where 50% of our talented workforce are women. This is more than just a statistic; it's a statement of our commitment to change. At Padpilot, we're not just educating the next generation of pilots; we're helping to shape a more inclusive and diverse future for aviation, where anyone, regardless of their background, can achieve their dreams. I was honored to moderate a panel last week in our McKinsey chalet at the Farnborough International Airshow, that explored how companies can enhance and sustain inclusion and diversity in the sector. We gathered influential leaders from aviation, aerospace, defence, and technology for a fascinating and insightful dialogue.   Some of the highlights from the conversation included:   - Diversity drives innovation, by leveraging diverse perspectives to creatively and effectively solve complex engineering problems - Culture is key to an inclusive work environment, requiring collaboration between people and leadership to recognise unconscious bias and create a safe space for sharing insights and opinions - Leveraging advanced technology is crucial for enhancing diversity and inclusion, but we must ensure AI does not instill bias in processes - Creating the strongest teams by designing in diversity and inclusion, including valuable skillsets and experiences from different generations and backgrounds Why are we discussing this now? McKinsey’s research shows that $12 Trillion could be added to global GDP by advancing women’s equality (source: https://lnkd.in/gQfN7w95), and the aviation and defence sectors can still do more on gender parity. The sky’s the limit for women in aerospace. We’re empowering them to soar through the glass ceiling by signing the “Féminisons les métiers de l'aéronautique et du spatial” (Let’s feminize the aeronautics and space professions) charter. Aligning with our commitment to increase diversity, equity and inclusion across the board, it calls for greater representation of women in aerospace roles traditionally filled by men. In France, around 40% of the production management team at our Pamiers Aerospace Coatings site are already women, and we’re working towards women filling more of our sales and other commercial and customer-facing roles.
