Annual Homeless Count to be conducted January 22-29 in Cherokee, Pickens, Forsyth, and Dawson Counties CANTON, GA (Jan. 16, 2024) – Homelessness in the United States soared by 12% to more than 650,000 people during a single-night count at the start of 2023, reflecting a surge in first-time homelessness. U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development stated in a new assessment of the homeless population provided to Congress that on a single night in January 2023, roughly 653,100 people -- or about 20 of every 10,000 people in the United States -- were experiencing homelessness. The annual nationwide Homeless Point in Time (PIT) count, which identifies both sheltered and unsheltered homeless across the country including Cherokee and neighboring Pickens, Forsyth, and Dawson counties, is being planned for the week of January 22nd to January 29th, according to Jim Lindenmayer, Director of the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans program. HOMELESS ENGAGEMENT LIFT PARTNERSHIP When it comes to homelessness, Arizona, Maricopa County, and Phoenix have a serious problem. There are about 29,000 homeless people in Arizona — one in every 227 Arizonans. And an estimated 61% of them are in Maricopa County. In addition, approximately 2,500 people are considered “unsheltered,” living on the streets. Most are single adults, and 79% of them are men. The number of homeless people in families is on the rise throughout Arizona, with many victims of domestic violence. According to DES, 4,346 adults and 4,095 children received help from domestic violence service providers. Isn’t it time we stop to think about what we can do to help reduce the homeless population in our community? With very little time and effort, each and every one of us can significantly improve the lives of the homeless. With a little extra effort, we can HELP reduce the number of Homeless in our community.

The 2024 Advocacy Agenda includes the U.S. Supreme Court case of the City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Gloria Johnson under the category of monitoring which addresses issues that may move into legislation and have the potential to impact homelessness. The case will determine whether, under our Constitution, a local government can make it a crime to involuntarily live outside and unsheltered, when adequate shelter is not available. The Salvation Army of Greenville County, SC, Miracle Hill Ministries, Inc., United Ministries, Pendleton Place have full emergency shelter beds. United Housing Connections is nearing completion of 36 homes at Church Street Place that will expand Greenville's capacity of permanent supportive housing - similar to where Christopher found hope and stability. On April 22, 2024, the US Supreme Court will convene marking a watershed moment in the legal landscape surrounding homelessness, criminalization, and the rights of unsheltered individuals. This landmark case holds profound significance as it grapples with the fundamental question of whether cities can lawfully penalize individuals, including veterans, for engaging in basic activities such as sleeping, sitting, or residing outdoors with minimal shelter options available. Today marks the first day of Homelessness Week 2024.    45% of homelessness for women and children is primarily caused by domestic and family violence. On average, homelessness services across Australia are turning away almost 300 people each day, 80% of whom are women and children.    Homelessness caused by domestic violence is preventable, and we all have the power to make a change.    This Homelessness Week, we’re asking you to join our movement and pledge to stop violence and prevent homelessness for women and children.    No woman should have to choose between escaping violence and having a roof over her head. This week we're counting down the top 5 steps for Victoria to make the leap to a society that has ended homelessness. The best (and most cost-effective) way to end homelessness is to stop it from happening in the first place. And one of the key ways to do that is to prevent unnecessary evictions.  In Victoria, the Private Rental Assistance Program, the Tenancy Assistance and Advocacy Program, and TenancyPlus are saving thousands of people from homelessness right now. But demands on these programs far exceed their funding. We need to increase funding to these programs to ensure they work as effectively as possible, saving Victorians from the trauma of homelessness and taking strain off the rest of the homelessness system. Adequate income support from the federal Government also has a vital role to play in ensuring households can meet their basic costs. What's been your experience with eviction-prevention programs? Since overhauling the homelessness response system in 2021, the All Neighbors Coalition has rehoused more than 10,100 people in Dallas and Collin counties - a 24% reduction in unsheltered homelessness.
