Today we commemorate Juneteenth, the national holiday that marks the end of the worst era of our history, an era in which our country failed to live up to the ideals promised in the Declaration of Independence: “…that all [people] are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Though we failed then, today God has graced us with a “do over.” We each can do our part to help our precious democratic experiment live up to her loftiest ideals. It is fitting, therefore, that Juneteenth is celebrated nearly two weeks to the day before the commemoration of our freedom and independence as a nation, allowing us simultaneously to mourn the past, celebrate the present, and commit to doing better in the future. So, the Office for Community Belonging invites you to join us this June 19th, Juneteenth, in reflecting upon how we can each build a stronger, even more inclusive community at Pepperdine and—as a result—a fairer and more inclusive world.

🌟 Honoring Juneteenth by Embracing Authenticity 🌟 Today, on Juneteenth, I reflect on the significance of this day and what it means to be truly authentic. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States—an important milestone in our ongoing journey toward equality and justice. As we celebrate freedom, I am reminded of the power of authenticity. Being authentic means embracing all aspects of who we are—our heritage, our experiences, and our unique perspectives. It's about honoring our stories and standing proudly in our truth. Personally, Juneteenth is a time for me to reflect on my own journey and the vast intersections of identities that shape me. It's a day to acknowledge the struggles and resilience of my ancestors, whose sacrifices paved the way for my opportunities today. In the professional world, authenticity fosters inclusivity and innovation. When we bring our authentic selves to work, we create spaces where diverse perspectives thrive and where everyone can contribute their best ideas. This is still a work in progress for me and something I strive towards more and more each day. Hey everyone! Did you know that November is Native American Heritage Month? It's a month-long celebration of the rich history, culture, and achievements of indigenous peoples in the United States. This month is particularly significant because it is an opportunity for us to honor and recognize the contributions of Native Americans to our society, both in the past and in the present. Native American culture is incredibly diverse, and there are over 570 federally recognized tribes within the United States alone. In addition to celebrating Native American contributions to art, music, literature, and more, we should also take this time to reflect on the obstacles and challenges that Indigenous people have faced throughout history. For example, many Native Americans were forcibly removed from their lands, had their cultures and traditions suppressed, and continue to face inequality and discrimination today. There are so many ways to get involved in Native American Heritage Month, from attending cultural events to reading literature by Native American authors. By learning about and celebrating Indigenous culture, we can begin to build a more just and equitable society for all. Did you know September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month? National #HispanicHeritageMonth traditionally honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and 18, respectively.
