The green revolution runs on chips–but there is no good way to make the fragile semiconductors ecosystem sustainable in the short term Summary: The semiconductor industry, integral to the green revolution, faces challenges in achieving sustainability. As chips become increasingly ubiquitous, their production and usage, involving high energy and water needs, significantly contribute to emissions. For example, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), a major chip manufacturer, heavily consumes Taiwan's electricity and water, causing resource shortages. However, addressing sustainability in this industry must be balanced with economic and security considerations, especially following the recent global chip shortage. The U.S. CHIPS and Science Act aims to boost chip production, but stringent environmental regulations could hinder this momentum. The semiconductor industry accounts for only 0.1 to 0.2% of global CO2 equivalent emissions, a small fraction considering their vital economic role. Chips are key to advancing smart grids, renewable energy, intelligent transportation, and energy-efficient manufacturing, all crucial for global sustainability. Major companies like TSMC, Intel, and Samsung have made significant strides in reducing resource usage and increasing renewable energy use, demonstrating the industry's capacity for self-regulation and sustainability alignment with economic goals. Regulatory flexibility, such as one-time exceptions to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), might be necessary to avoid hindering the industry's growth and competitiveness. Adapting chip production processes for sustainability requires significant R&D investments without assured outcomes, and supply chain adjustments for sustainability could affect costs and efficiency. Today, I had the honor to keynote at the Global Semiconductor and Electronics Forum 2023 in San Diego. My talk focused on AMD’s vision for #AdaptiveComputing and how much this technology has evolved since the early iterations of #FPGAs.   Each day we are witnessing life-altering innovations in virtually every industry. From driver assistance to robotic surgery, these applications all need intelligent computing at the edge, while meeting three key trends:   -ENERGY EFFICIENCY. Minimizing power consumption is critical for battery life, thermal constraints, and operating costs. -AI INFERENCING + COMPUTE ACCELERATION AT THE EDGE. Many of these applications require both high performance and low latency, which means signal and data processing need to take place in the vehicle, in the security camera, or in the store. -RAPID INNOVATION AND FUTURE-PROOFING. Most industries are moving at a breakneck pace, and your engineering teams are under tremendous pressure to get differentiated products to market ahead of the competition. In addition, they need to be able to adapt the products to changing requirements down the road.    Adaptive computing empowers an adaptable and AI-driven future, which is critical for our connected, intelligent, and adaptive world, and enables users to build the right processing pipeline for their needs. The benefits of adaptability vary by application, but by utilizing adaptable architecture to provide compute efficiency through workload optimization at the silicon level, it’s not uncommon to see over an order of magnitude performance improvement vs. CPU implementations of the same function. In addition, developers can reconfigure devices even years down the road – advancing performance, new features, and new innovations. The combination of domain-specific hardware integrated with leading design tools is how adaptive computing allows you to truly customize, adapt, and innovate to solve your biggest challenges.
