Here’s Why Astera Labs made our Top 13 AI/ML startups to watch Q4 update Just as teamwork can create sports dynasties, synergy among leaders who are on an ambitious mission together is one of the greatest predictors of success for a startup. Astera Labs exemplifies this principle and stands tall among an elite group of startups I’ve seen emerge in the last decade with leadership so strong and focused, that I believe their becoming the next $1 billion semiconductor company is in reach. That cohesiveness is the result of decades of shared experience. Co-founders Sanjay Gajendra, Casey Morrison and Jitendra M. previously worked together at Texas Instruments, tackling some of the most complex challenges in high-speed data interconnect and contributing to the shipment of billions for TI. When they stepped away in 2017 to form Astera Labs, the challenge they wanted to solve was so integral to data transmission that Jitendra likened it to being “as fundamental as fixing a plumbing problem”. The mission was to eliminate the bottleneck of data transmission. Initially, they focused on the I/O and succeeded in developing a new generation of PCIe retimers, and as a result, Astera has done more in recent years to advance the PCIe protocol than those with greater experience and time in the market. Then, as AI began rising in popularity and heterogeneous computing workloads started growing exponentially, Astera’s founders identified the opportunity to expand their product mix and create an even greater impact while staying true to their objective of making data transmission more efficient. They developed a purpose-built SoC and accelerator platform dubbed “Leo” leveraging the CXL protocol which was still relatively new at the time. They taped out, released silicon, and achieved successful customer deployments all before the end of 2022. Ultimately, making technologies like AI and ML more cost-effective to deploy is the underpinning of democratization and Astera has continued expanding their solutions ecosystem to drive the increased adoption of hardware that rewrites the economics of data transmission. That mission-oriented thinking is exactly how the founders have attracted some of the world’s brightest minds who want to solve real problems and create products that will be used by the entire world. Michael Ocampo highlighted this point during the SC23 Conference, saying “I knew Astera had their PCIe retimer product; that was an opportunity for me to be part of the solution. Then when I came over and saw the breadth of product Astera was building I felt like there was a lot more opportunity to solve three big problems - data, memory, and Ethernet connectivity.” Success leaves clues and Astera received one of the biggest indications of it last week - they were awarded the GSA’s “Most Respected Private Semiconductor Company”.
