In 1997, Captain Charles Moore sailed from Hawai to California, stumbling upon an alarming sight: not ocean waves, but a massive sea of plastic. This unplanned encounter alarmed the world and raised awareness about what we now know as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPDP) —a colossal trash zone spanning 1.6 million square kilometres, three times the size of France!
The plastic takes every form, from tires to shoes to lots of fishing gear. These larger items degrade through sunlight and wave action, breaking down into smaller pieces, ultimately becoming microplastics. Therefore, while the concept of a “garbage patch” brings up images of an island of trash floating on the ocean, it is almost entirely made up of micro-plastics, outnumbering vital zooplankton crucial for oceanic ecosystems by a staggering 5:2 ratio.
The fishing industry significantly contributes to this issue. The fish we consume reach supermarkets through commercial fishing or aquafarming, and despite claims of sustainable fishing up to 1 million tonnes of this fishing equipment is abandoned in the ocean annually, with this “ghost gear” amounting to nearly half of the GPGP debris.
But why should you care? Beyond the obvious catastrophic environmental devastation, it's not just about sad turtles. Chemicals from plastics, already present from the surface layer to the deep depths of our oceans, seep into marine creatures, continuing up the food chain onto our dinner plates. This isn't just about hurting sea life; it's a threat to our health too.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a collective problem demanding urgent attention. It reveals the stark reality of our plastic addiction and the consequential impact on our oceans, wildlife, and ultimately, ourselves. It's time to confront this plastic plague, advocating for preventing the production of plastic in the first place! 🌎🚯 #JoinUs #GPGPAlert #BreakFreeFromPlastic #ZeroWaste
