Sincerely hope that the CrowdStrike issue is not blamed on a single engineer who wrote that faulty piece of code. This was probably the costliest mistake in the history of modern IT but it does highlight a systemic problem more so than an individual issue. If your processes rely on engineers not making mistakes - then it’s a problem with your process. I wonder why changes were not rolled out on a smaller sample before a worldwide release. This is something we follow as standard practice whenever rolling out new features.

Stay classy people. There are hundreds of thousands of people having a profoundly bad day today, from IT, Infrastructure people to corporate IT users and then the downstream impacted end users. Remember this can happen to anyone. I get this is a bigger scale, but that doesn't mean that when it happens to you it won't be stressful. That doesn't mean it's not funny to mock the situation, it does mean it's not OK to speculate that they aren't good engineers because: * Didn't have unit tests * Didn't test the deployments * Didn't do canaries You don't know what's gone on, don't pass judgement. #hugops to all the engineering teams working on fixing the respective systems, and also to the CrowdStrike support teams helping their customers. That said... this day will go down in history, and not for good reasons. I hope it's given everyone pause about FMEA and the fact that you need to plan for even the edge cases in your infrastructure.
