A different, health-focused angle on the Paris Olympics, 2024. Sky News reported that fewer world records were broken this year than other Olympics. Their take? The marginal gains delivered by the explosion of Sports Science and Technology since Atlanta 1996 are producing diminishing returns. The Dave Brailsfords of this world are now looking for the extra 0.1%, rather than 1%, perhaps. And this all makes sense to me. But what if this weren't the only factor at play? If you were to follow the growing data linking the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and overall community wellness, you might see that even mild Covid can cause lasting damage to our biological functions. Long Covid is a growing epidemic which we must consider mitigating by wearing a mask indoors and the conversation on this will continue to grow for years to come. Many of the impacts of milder Long Covid may not simply be noticeable until our older years. As someone who had Long Covid for 9 months in 2020, and probably still does to a degree, I recognise I will relate to this information more strongly than many will. Isn't preventing diseases and injuries a good reason to make public transport (as in EDSA buses) under the government who can mandate measures? Keeping the buses sanitized, installing & changing a/c filters, making buses friendly to PWD & seniors cost money to the private operators and do not increase profits. Likewise there is no competition on routes to force bus operators to improve service since most bus routes are awarded to a specific group of bus operators. For cycles (both ICE & EV) is showing the fastest growth much more than pedal bikes (as cars become more expensive & buses became point-to-point only) but most accidents & injuries occur is because cycle riders are reckless by choice weaving in out of traffic and enforcers allow lane-splitting (cycles pass between 2 car lanes). To increase pedal bike usage, has anyone made a study amongst Makati, BGC, Ortigas & other CBD office workers if they are willing to bike to work if certain main roads will be solely for pedal bikes (hence max safety) notwithstanding rain and heat? (A Taiwanese expat in our former textile co told me cars have to be parked at the outskirts of the city & from there, he brings out his folding pedal bike from the trunk & bike to office - - would Filipinos & Expats be willing to do that in Manila?
