Give young talents a real chance! What leaders can learn from the first games of the EURO2024. We have seen the first matches of the EURO2024. The start was very promising. Not only because Germany won, but because people from different countries come together to celebrate football, celebrate the pride in their country and celebrate themselves. The trophy here clearly goes to the scottish fans (so far). How Europe´s best teams compete also tells a story on different approaches to create high performing teams and the role of talent management (TM). Much has been written on what defines high performers (the best formular I came across is from #DagurSigurdsson: Success = Talent + Training + Attitude), on how to detect and on how to attract&retain talent. But not so much on the importance of taking a real bet on young talent vs. holding on to experience. I was impressed by Julian Nagelsmann and even more by Louis de la Fuente. Germany started into the Euro right away with Florian Wirtz (21y) and Jamal Musialla (21y) playing with Kai Harvatz in the offense – and both (all three!) scored. Spain started with Nico Williams (21y) and Jamine Yamal (16y – youngest player ever in a EURO) in their offense and had with Pedri another 21y old in the starting eleven! They didn´t score, but Yamal helped Dani Carvajal to shoot his first goal ever for Spain beating Croatia. How much Yamal is accepted one could see when he and not one of the established players shot an important free kick. Often it is the other way round! And talking about talent one should not forget Jude Bellingham (20y) scoring for England securing their 1:0 in yesterday´s game plus being the obvious leader of the team. What can leaders take away from it: ·      TM starts at the bottom detecting and promoting talent (so credit goes to their early clubs and coaches for doing the groundwork). ·      TM takes leaders being courageus and willing to take a personal bet on talent. A real bet means: put them on the field when it matters. Don´t leave them on the bench just sniffing the atmosphere or put them in only when the game is decided. ·      TM requires leaders to create room for young talents. Means: Rebuilding the team from time to time. Which is always a difficult decision since experience, successful players need to step back. ·      TM works best mixing talent with experience (Spain and Germany are also good examples for this!). But make sure experience is not dominating leaving no space for the young ones (asking Toni Kroos to come back was also in this way a great idea!) ·      TM means sticking to talent in success AND in failure. Only that differentiates real TM from lip service. ·      The best TMs view and treat young talent not only as an investment to win tomorrow (so FIFA2026), but already as a means to win today (so EURO2024). South Africa clinched a record fourth Rugby World Cup title by beating New Zealand yesterday at Paris. Not sure how many in my network follow Rugby, but I started enjoying the game since last few years.... Here are are few leadership and teamwork lessons which we can emulate in our daily life. - In Rugby you have to pass the ball behind you, similar to your life you can't ignore the past. - Just like a scrum reset, we need to retreat and regroup, to ultimately gain ground. Leaders must know when to pause, reassess and recalibrate. - The deep trust between rugby players to support each other reflects how vulnerability and openness can unlock synergies within business teams.  - Last but not the least, a highly physical contact team game, has comparatively less fights as player respect each other and follow the rules. By observing the seamless coordination, nimble adaptation, mutual trust and cohesion at their best, leaders can glean tips to build high-performing teams. #rugbyworldcup2023 #teamworkmatters

The ongoing UEFA EURO tournament serves a lesson in team management. As a football manager/coach, do you put your "best 11" to start every match? Recent reports alleged that England manager Gareth Southgate chooses his first 11 based on seniority and not necessarily the "best 11". But as the team manager, surely that is within his right? Football managers have their reasons for selecting who plays. His selection could be because of strategy, tactic, who the opponents are, perhaps even weather conditions. Do the players have any right to be upset at not being selected? What about in the workplace? If you feel overlooked by your boss, do you have a case? Does your boss know something about you that you do not? Is your value totally in the hands of your boss? Just considering the amount of talented players on every team's benches in the UEFA EURO Championships, perhaps the adage about size of fish and size of pond is not a snapshot but a constant adjustment of expectations. No d!ckheads. Team is everything. A lot is said about the 'journey'. A lot about 'trusting the process'. More needs to be said about the company you’re in - literally, the people you’re with, day to day.  The New Zealand rugby team, the All Blacks, introduced a ‘no d1ckheads policy’ many years ago. According to the All Blacks, a d1ckhead is someone who: Puts themselves ahead of the team Thinks they are entitled to things or expects the rules to be different for them Operates deceitfully or is ‘unnecessarily loud about their work’.  The New Zealand coach Gilbert Enoka has said: “The management might not spot these counterproductive behaviours. The players and leaders themselves should call others out for their inflated egos.” The introduction of the no d1ckheads policy saw the New Zealand rugby team win back to back World Cups in 2011 and 2015. Enoka goes on to say: “A d1ckhead makes everything about them; often teams put up with it because a player has so much talent. We look for early warning signs and wean the big egos out pretty quickly. Our motto is, if you can’t change the people, change the people.” Are you trying to build something important? Environment and Appreciation What a joy to see this prodigy smile again and feel valued. In modern football, he is certainly one of my favourite players alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Jude Bellingham. When I saw the video, I had to think back to my decisions in the past when I consciously parted ways with certain players, be it in the active squad or at youth level. Football is a tough business and sometimes you have to make unpopular decisions as a coach, but the moment I deliberately take a player away from his favourite activity and punish him, I have failed as a coach. It is better to say directly and openly that the relationship is not right and that everyone should go their own way. However, this requires an authentic character without egocentric traits, with a clear focus on objectivity and high people management qualities, which is something that is increasingly falling away in football today and instead we are producing masses who prepare the weekly schedule perfectly but have no feeling at all for where their team is at the moment or what it needs. Sometimes it's more honest to say that you don't have the same ambition and work ethic and that it's better to part ways. But the real skill is to convince a talented player like Sancho at the age of 20 of your idea as a coach, without deviating from your plans for the team, and get him to perform at his best. One of the reasons I appreciate the academy coaching at this level is that you learn to deal with this kind of situation and deal with the pressure they feel because they are so talented and still so young with so much potential.
