DIGITAL TWINS: The next frontier of VR technology A digital twin is a digital model of a real-world physical product, system, or process. Originating from the United States’ National Aeronautical and Space Administration in 2010, as part of an attempt to improve the physical-model simulation of spacecraft, the term describes a counterpart for simulation, integration, testing, monitoring and maintenance. The digital twin can and does often exist before there is a physical entity. The use of a digital twin in the creation phase allows the intended entity’s entire lifecycle to be modelled and simulated. A digital twin of an existing entity may be used in real-time and regularly synchronized with the corresponding physical system. Nasa has been researching and developing Boundary Layer Ingestion (BLI) as a means of improving aerodynamic efficiency for many years now. It harnesses the slower air that flows along the aircraft surfaces, something that's not possible for most aircraft today with the engines set away from the aircraft body. This means the engines don't have to work so hard and it also reduces drag on the aircraft, which further improves fuel efficiency. https://lnkd.in/eAwDapXp It has the potential to reduce aircraft fuel burn by as much as 8.5% and some studies project up to 15% saving. This is significant in a world where there needs to be a focus on reducing fuel burn, even with sustainable fuels. There have been some experiments with practical application but there's still room for large scale real world implementation of the technology.
