Congratulations to Dr Shannon Reid on her foray into the exciting world of robotic surgery! It was an absolute pleasure to join Dr Reid in theatre recently. When advanced laparoscopic surgeons like Dr Reid, who regularly perform complex minimally invasive surgical procedures utilising traditional “straight stick” instruments, get the opportunity to perform the same procedures utilising robotic platforms, magic is truly created. Seeing the smiles on the faces of surgeons as they perform the same surgeries they have done hundreds of times, using robotic arms that can bend and move as if an extension of their own hands, coupled with incredibly detailed 3D images- these are the moments that make my job as a robotic proctor so enjoyable. Dr Reid was a natural, and all I had to do was sit back and watch as she made complex surgical procedures look effortless. The console also provided plenty of comfort, maximising safety and minimising fatigue which is especially important during longer complex cases. My recommendation to Dr Reid was simply to bring her more complex cases to see how the robot really shines. I now reserve all my complex cases for use exclusively on the robot. However, the sad truth remains that access to robotic platforms in Australia remains extremely limited, especially for gynaecologists. The issue with access for patients is purely a financial one. Other specialties like urology and general surgery are often given preference by private hospital administrators to use the robot over gynaecologists. This is simply because gynaecological procedures provide less income to hospitals compared with other specialities. I often find this incredibly frustrating and believe that this is just another example of how women and their reproductive health are so undervalued by our society. My hope is that by facilitating fantastic surgeons like Dr Reid to become advanced robotic surgeons, we build up the manpower (or should I say woman-power) to re-evaluate the worth of our gynaecological patients and provide them with the same access to robotic platforms as all other patients.  May we continue to advocate for our patients and provide a promising future for robotic gynaecological surgery! #roboticsurgery #surgicalprocedures #surgicalprocedure #roboticplatform #surgeon #ilovetheatre #DaVinci

My most recent post "Looking for talented surgeons" was a request for names of surgeons that fit the criteria I listed who performed SIJ fusions. The criteria I put forth was simply the requirements I held my self to when I was in practice and soliciting SIJ chronic pain patients for possible surgery, and criteria that I think all patients would like to see in their surgeon. Almost 1000 people looked at this post. I have received not one surgeon's name that I could add to my list (3 currently) of potential SIJ surgeons to refer patients to who contact me on the web. There are really only two reasons why no one responded. 1. They just didn't want to (that's okay). 2. Surgeons filling my criteria must be be in short supply!
