Europe has made great strides in investing in renewables over the past 25 years, and there is an urgent need to accelerate the energy transition. At COP28 in Dubai almost 200 countries agreed to dramatically accelerate investment in electrification, with the goal of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030. To achieve this goal, energy sector giant Iberdrola believes it is time for an accelerated investment in, and greater commitment to, the grid. Europe’s grids cannot keep up with the expansion of renewable energy and are becoming the main impediment to getting more clean energy into the network. 'We need better, smarter networks now to keep up with the energy revolution,' the company says. It aims to highlight ongoing developments, emerging trends, and key achievements in the renewable energy sector. The report also seeks to identify challenges and opportunities in the renewable energy landscape, with a focus on policy, investment, finance, and economic and social value creation. Key findings of the report include: - In 2023, global additions to renewable power capacity increased an estimated 36% to reach 473 GW, setting a new record for the 22nd consecutive year. - Renewable energy accounted for 86% of power capacity additions in 2023. - Renewables represented just 12.9% of total final energy consumption in 2022, indicating the need for further progress. - At the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai, 130 countries pledged to triple renewable energy capacity and double the annual rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030. - Employment in the renewables sector increased by 8% in 2022, reaching 13.7 million jobs. - The number of people lacking electricity access globally fell from 756 million in 2022 to 745 million in 2023.   On the eve of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has unveiled its latest report: Energy Efficiency 2023. The publication spotlights the ambitious move to double the annual energy efficiency goal from 2% to 4%, a topic slated for formal discussion during COP28 in Dubai in the coming weeks. Doubling of the annual energy efficiency goal from 2% to 4% means that by 2030, globally, we can: 🌍 Attain 7 Gt of CO2 emission savings 👥 Generate 4.5 million jobs in the energy efficiency value chain 📉 Slash energy bills by 1/3 in advanced economies 💡 Obtain energy savings equal to double the entire energy consumption of the EU in 2022 Why is the 4% goal necessary? ⚡Global energy efficiency is projected to decline to 1.3% in 2023, down from 2% in 2022. The 4% goal acts as a catalyst for implementing energy efficiency measures from 2024 onward. 🌍 Locally, some regions have already achieved the goal. For instance, the EU achieved 8% energy efficiency in 2022 and anticipates a 5% energy efficiency increase in 2023. 🌐 Policy action translates into tangible results: 💰 Global annual energy efficiency investment has surged by 45% since 2020. Three EU countries (France, Germany, Italy) represent 44% of global energy efficiency investments in 2023. 🏗️ The goals can be swiftly achieved with existing technologies, among which building retrofits with heat pumps and LED lighting play an irreplaceable role.
