The Lauder family, founders of cosmetics giant Estée Lauder, has hosted opulent shareholder meetings at Essex House, New York, for years. Recently, they shifted to a short virtual meeting reflecting changes in the company's operations and challenges. Estée Lauder, started by Estée Lauder (born Josephine Esther Mentzer) in the 1930s, grew under her son Leonard Lauder's leadership. He expanded the business and took it public in 1995. The company's shares have recently plunged by about 50%, eroding $45 billion in market value, partly due to difficulties in the China market and slower adoption of platforms like TikTok. There's internal strife over CEO Fabrizio Freda's leadership, with some board members and family members favoring him, while others contemplate external CEO candidates. The Lauders, a symbol of the American dream and a prominent New York society family, have significantly contributed to art and philanthropy. Environmental Messaging: Are We Unintentionally Reinforcing Stereotypes? Just watched a video ad from the Adidas x Parley collaboration on climate change and pollution awareness. The message is powerful and vital – our planet needs our immediate attention. Yet, there's something worth discussing here. While the video's message resonates deeply, I couldn't help but notice the visual representation. The individual explaining the damage to our oceans was a person of a specific ethnicity, while those portrayed as change-makers and advocates for positive change were predominantly people of color, representing various ethnicities, with very few individuals of a different background. This visual representation raises important questions about environmental awareness campaigns. Are we unintentionally placing the burden and responsibility for change disproportionately on the shoulders of those who belong to developing countries or marginalized communities? Are we indirectly reinforcing the idea that the developing world is primarily responsible for pollution and in need of education? Climate change and pollution are global issues that require collective efforts from every corner of the world. It's imperative that we recognize that these challenges affect everyone, irrespective of their background. Environmental advocacy should not inadvertently perpetuate stereotypes or imply that certain groups bear more responsibility than others. This observation is not intended to point fingers, but rather to open up a thoughtful dialogue. Let's use this video as an opportunity to open up a discussion about how we frame these messages and ensure they reflect the complexity of the issue.
