I am putting together an Employer Directory to make it easier for Vancouver Island University students from all programs to find relevant organizations that they might be interested in working for, both locally and nationally. If your organization hires students or graduates for employment or internship opportunities, and would like to be considered to be included on this resource, please send me: - a company description, - the types of internships/employment roles that you might hire students or graduates for, - and a link to your company's career/internship page! Even if you are not able to attend Career Fairs and other in-person events at VIU, being on this resource will increase visibility of your organization and opportunities among our students and alum, as this will be a resource that we direct them to for career exploration purposes. This is a project that I have had on my mind for some time, after consulting with many students seeking employment and internship opportunities in the local community and who were not finding all the relevant opportunities and organizations based on a simple Google search. The goal is to provide a snapshot of the organizations that provide high-quality opportunities for students, and to help students see the multiple types of roles that might exist within an organization. At Castlegate Education a lot of what we do is work which is confidential. It’s either due diligence or business development, and that takes time. I’m about to take my twelfth flight of the year to a “secret location”. At this point, we don’t know whether the result will be a successful establishment of a UK brand abroad or not. It depends on the people we meet, local market conditions, and the strength of the opportunity. Even great opportunities sometimes don’t come to fruition just because the parties’ values, expectations, or timescales aren’t aligned. We shake hands and walk away. But without the travel, looking people in the eye, resources deployed, and time building relationships, there can never be success. Here’s hoping that this flight brings that return on investment- a successful project. But also, think on this - if the trip makes us reassess, redefine, delay or even discontinue because we did the proper due diligence ….it has still been a successful mission.

Last month's Vistage meeting highlighted the complexities structure examining work levels and the importance of defining cross-functional relationships with clear accountabilities. Tom Foster outlined seven key types of these relationships: service getting, prescribing, audit, monitoring, coordinating, collateral, and advisory, essential for an organization's overall functionality. The discussions emphasized the importance of "testing" team members with special projects to evaluate for advancement readiness, preparing them for future roles or promotions. This strategy enhances operational efficiency and prepares the team for dynamic growth and adaptability.
