May is Stroke Awareness Month The Hypertension Management Program (HMP) toolkit is an online interactive training for a team-based, patient-centered, integrated care model. The goal of the HMP is to improve the quality of patient care and decrease the number of patients with uncontrolled hypertension to improve each patient’s overall health and well-being. This toolkit was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP) to provide healthcare organizations, including those in resource-constrained settings, with the information and resources to implement the HMP and improve hypertension control among their patients. Aiming to increase awareness among policymakers and the public about rare diseases and their impact on patients' lives, Rare Disease Day is observed on the last day of February each year. Today, on the first day of February, we invite you to start thinking about the importance of prioritizing rare disease care. Pause for a second. Now think: how many people do you think are affected by a rare disease? Current reports indicate that over 300 million people are affected globally at any given time. That is, in the aggregate, rare diseases are not rare. Patients living with rare diseases will face a myriad of very specific challenges. With over 7,000 known rare diseases, patients may experience symptoms but struggle to find physicians knowledgeable about their specific condition and who can help manage them. They may endure the consequences of the disease and yet the condition may remain entirely unrecognized – preventing them from connecting with others who may be experiencing similar challenges. Moreover, they may not be able to access disease-specific medications. These challenges have a negative impact on individuals, society and health systems. Work together with AHF in advancing multi-stakeholder collaboration in the rare disease environment, increasing knowledge on unmet needs and opportunities, and strategizing on how to overcome existing barriers. The European ME Alliance (EMEA) has released the findings of a comprehensive survey shedding light on the distressing state of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME, referred to as ME/CFS in some countries) patients across Europe. The report underscores the urgent need for healthcare systems to recognise ME/CFS as a serious physical illness and provide better medical care, financial support, and social services.
