The PSHRA Greater Kansas City board had our second meeting last week preparing for the new membership year! Don't forget to renew your membership or join soon! At the last meeting, Kelly Postlewait, J.D. and Certified Conflict Mediator wasn't able to join us for our recognition of outgoing board members. Thanks Kelly for your contributions as Program Chair last year and we look forward to your work in your new role as President Elect! Coming soon! Help us celebrate our new board members as we share bios of each of them and why we are so excited to have them join the board.

It is important to make choices about the committee structure for a board that reflect the life stage of the organization, whether the board is a working board or a strategic board, what staffing is available, and how many active and engaged board members there are.

For those who are responsible for planning the operations and strategic direction of their nonprofit’s board, I offer a few suggestions based on one of the boards that I serve on, Landscape Architecture Foundation. ☑️ Make at least 1 seat available to emerging leaders. Their perspective is invaluable. ☑️ Meetings in-person should be designed around spending time for breaking bread together and building relationships during which all other work is set aside for maximum and genuine attention towards each other as humans and the greater big picture mission of the organization. ☑️ Hosting online committee meetings has proven effective, because relationships are also built from f2f video interactions, as groups commit time to do actual work together with the best brains. ☑️ Spend less time on fancy presentations and presenting to each other, and more time providing valuable industry updates through conversational report outs and with data! ☑️ Focus on information mobility! Communication is a board’s key responsibility. Figure out how to mobilize the information that shows you’re paying attention to your audience’s needs and pain points. If you serve on a board or in an organization that has a board, feel free to offer additional tips from your experience 👇 More to come on this topic! #nonprofitleadership #associationmanagement #leadership #service #volunteering #makingadifference

Recognize the Work of CSE, Staff, Volunteers, and Board Members When commemorating achievements, successful events, annual meetings, and other milestones, remember to do so as a team, celebrating the collective efforts of board members, committee members, CSE, staff, and volunteers. Avoid creating an impression of board vs staff or any other factions. Speak in a unified voice and appreciate the contributions of everyone involved in supporting the association's triumphs! Check out our latest blog for steps to take to achieve successful board governance and help your association’s board of directors be the best it can be for your members. https://bit.ly/3rKc3Ik

This will be a great webinar! I have great respect for Larraine Segil and John Driver, NACD.DC. It is critical that #boarddirectors have different backgrounds and share different points of view respectfully. These differences improve the organization's strategy and risk oversight. #corporategovernance #DirectorExcellence
