📈 Renewables are breaking records but need massive acceleration to meet global target. The last twenty years have been a global success story in terms of renewable capacity generation. From 20% of annual power capacity expansion in 2003 to almost 90% in 2023, renewables have been rising steadily and represent more than half of annual total capacity generation since 2011. Last year hit a 473 GW net increase in global renewable power capacity. These numbers are proof that the industry can deliver and that #3xRenewables is possible. However, urgent action to mobilise finances, speed up permitting, optimise grids, and fortify supply chains is required to reach the global target of 11,000 GW by 2030. This is an amazing target and forecast. At Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute - QEERI we have years of knowledge, local data and a team of experts to assist the region into the achievement of this target. According to IRENA, by 2030, renewable energy capacity would have been almost one-third below the target. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report showed that the world risks missing a goal to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 as the current growth rate is inadequate. Last year, there was a significant increase in renewable energy capacity, but to meet the 2030 target, a higher annual growth rate is needed.
