Last week, Addleshaw Goddard and Headway Capital Partners hosted our very first Independent Sponsors Forum, aimed at private equity sponsors pursuing a deal-by-deal approach.   We welcomed nearly 120 sponsors, investors and others in the ISP community to our London office for an afternoon of insightful panel discussions and presentations covering a range of topics including the market opportunity, challenges of capital raising, legal and commercial terms and practicalities of getting deals done. Not to mention, plenty of networking over drinks and nibbles!   Over the past few years, we've certainly got the impression that this operating model is gaining momentum and the recent Financial Times article supported this. But the demand for this event exceeded our expectations and we had to scramble find additional seats on the day – not to mention the positivity and enthusiasm from our guests who in many cases had flown in specially for the event.   A special thanks to Christiaan de Lint, Ulrich Hardt and Zoe Yeo (née Karkaletsos) from Headway Capital Partners and Jan Grüter, Laura Uberoi and Mike Hinchliffe for helping to organise the event as well as our other panellists who shared their knowledge and experiences.   Look out for some more key insights posted from members of the team over the coming weeks. Richard Wilson posted about his Top 7 Goals this year and it inspired me to post my top goals. I will keep it to 4 business goals and 4 personal goals. I am doing this for 2 reasons: You never know who can help you (closed mouths don’t get fed) and accountability is a good thing. I am a fan of OKRs so I will post the Objectives: Top 4 Business Objectives 1. Get to US$5M in stockholders equity 2. Complete the largest Reg A+ by a minority-owned firmed and then share the recipe for others to follow 3. List on NASDAQ and become the first publicly-listed vehicle giving exposure to investments in the Caribbean 4. Bring a group of investors to Jamaica and Barbados so they can see these countries the way that I see them Top 4 Personal Objectives 1. Stay healthy 2. More quality time with wife and children 3. Spend more time with my parents 4. Donate to University of Miami to create scholarships for business school students

HIS LEGACY CONTINUES though he is gone because of a few things. -       STRUCTURE -       SUCCESSION PLAN -       CORPORATE GOVERNANCE -       FUNCTIONAL BOARDS. If you plan to truly build a LEGACY BUSINESS, consider setting up a BOARD. There are different types of boards and they serve different purposes. a. BOARD OF DIRECTORS. A board of directors is essentially a panel of people who are elected to represent shareholders. b. ADVISORY BOARD: An advisory board is a group of experts who lend their skills, guidance, and knowledge to an organization (corporation, nonprofit, or association). In short, an advisory board serves the purpose of its name—to offer advice that helps an organization grow and achieve its goals. c. MANAGEMENT BOARD: The group of senior managers who are in charge of and control a company or organization: Public companies are required by law to have a functional board of directors. Private companies in Nigeria mostly have board members for the purpose of registration. If you truly want to build a legacy business capable of operating independently, consider establishing a functional board as your business evolves and matures.
