Happy Independence Day! As we celebrate this summer holiday, let’s pause to reflect on the foundation of what our nation was built upon - that all people have the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, a freedom often overlooked when in the midst of our everyday routine. In honor of our freedom, consider taking a few moments to think of the freedoms we enjoy and the people who have positively impacted your life. This may be the perfect opportunity to jot down what you’re grateful for and express gratitude to those who touched your life in a meaningful way. Writing it down solidifies it in your mind, is easy to do, and is something you can refer back to when you need an extra boost. In terms of expressing gratitude to people, don’t worry about how long it’s been. How would you feel if someone in your past reached out to you, out of the blue and shared how much of a meaningful difference you made in his/her life? More importantly, what closure and potential happiness would it give to you by doing this? I love holiday time because it allows me to learn and spend time with those more senior than me as well as those younger than me. The ones who somehow just make you feel better when you’re in their presence; the ones who make your heart rate go down, and the corners of your mouth go up. The ones you spend time with, and somehow just know deep down that your life is better because they are in it. The ones who show up for you, the ones who encourage you, the ones who remind you that good people? They truly do exist. Search for those people. Seek out those people. Be intentional about creating relationships with those people. And most importantly - Be grateful for those people. Their presence in your life? It’s no coincidence. They were hand selected for you, and you for them. The light bringers; the life givers. You’ll know when you found them. Just don’t let go once you do.

As I celebrate my birthday, I find myself deep in contemplation, reflecting on the trajectory of my life thus far and the formidable journey that still lies ahead. Years ago, I made the deliberate choice to depart from the structured path of formal education and immerse myself in the service of my community.
