Netflix's “Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut" is a documentary that merged gut microbiome experts, four individuals – including a well-known hot dog eating champion – facing personal battles with gastrointestinal health, and a unique, effective visual method of “showing” the gut microbiome in action. Recently, Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) and Town Hall Seattle collaborated to put on an event with the film's director Anjali Nayar and scientific advisor (and ISB associate professor) Dr. Sean M. Gibbons. If you missed the event, you can read our recap and watch the recording. https://lnkd.in/gkzZvDep

One of the key points in my Health and Wellness workshop is sharing how the ecosystem of microbes in our gut contribute to our mood states and affect how we react to stress and challenge. If an organization is to be resilient in times of challenge, their people must first be resilient in mind and body! Organizations can support and promote healthy lifestyles for their people. Physical health is mental health are two sides of the same coin! #healthandwellness #organizationalresilience #stressmanagement #mindbodyconnection
While science and medicine have certainly come a long way in the last 2,400 years, emerging science has proven Hippocrates was right all those years ago—all disease begins in the gut. This means our gut microbiome, including gut bacteria and the integrity of our gut lining, strongly affects our overall health. On today’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m excited to talk to Dr. Steven Gundry about gut diversity and how a diverse gut biome is directly linked to health and longevity. He also shares the keys to a healthy microbiome, and we go in-depth on the role that polyphenols—those colorful compounds found in plant foods—play in feeding our gut bacteria. In the exploration of gut health and its impact on overall well-being, a less-known aspect involves the concept of "gut diversity" and its crucial connection to health and longevity. Gut diversity refers to the variety and abundance of different microbial species present in the gastrointestinal tract. Research suggests that a diverse gut microbiome is associated with various health benefits and may play a key role in promoting longevity. 1. Gut Diversity and Health: - A diverse gut microbiome is often considered a sign of a healthy and resilient digestive system. Different species of bacteria contribute to various functions, including nutrient absorption, immune system regulation, and the production of bioactive compounds. - Reduced gut diversity has been linked to various health issues, including inflammatory bowel diseases, metabolic disorders, and autoimmune conditions. Conversely, a richer and more diverse microbial community is associated with a lower risk of these health problems. 2. Keys to a Healthy Microbiome: - Diet: A balanced and diverse diet that includes a wide range of fibers, prebiotics, and nutrients promotes the growth of diverse microbial species in the gut. Plant-based foods, in particular, are known to support a healthy microbiome. - Probiotics: Consuming foods rich in probiotics, such as yogurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables, can introduce beneficial bacteria to the gut, enhancing its diversity and functionality. - Avoiding Overuse of Antibiotics: Excessive or unnecessary use of antibiotics can disrupt the balance of the gut microbiome. Responsible use of antibiotics and strategies to support microbial recovery afterward are crucial for maintaining diversity. 3. Polyphenols and Gut Health: - Polyphenols are plant compounds found in colorful fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee, and red wine. These compounds have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. - Emerging research suggests that polyphenols play a crucial role in supporting gut health by acting as prebiotics—substances that nourish and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. They can enhance microbial diversity and contribute to the overall balance of the gut microbiome. Understanding the importance of gut diversity and adopting habits that support a healthy microbiome can have far-reaching implications for longevity and overall health. The intricate relationship between diet, microbial diversity, and the role of specific compounds like polyphenols highlights the interconnectedness of our lifestyle choices and the well-being of the trillions of microorganisms residing in our gut.

Join me at the 4th International Evolutionary Health Conference, where experts gather in a virtual setting to delve deep into the realms of nutrition, lifestyle, and health through the lens of evolutionary science. This captivating event is scheduled for Saturday, September 30th, kicking off at 9:45 AM Eastern Time, 6:45 AM Pacific Time, 2:45 PM in the United Kingdom and Portugal, and 3:45 PM in Central European Summer Time (CEST). I’ll be speaking on sun-induced vitamin D synthesis. Here’s a brief summary of what will be discussed in my talk: Ultraviolet B radiation is absorbed in the epidermis by 7-dehydrocholesterol, giving rise to previtamin D3 and subsequently to vitamin D3. In the liver, vitamin D is converted through one of the various cytochrome P-450 enzymes to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OHD3). 25OHD3 will then travel to different organs and tissues, where it will be converted by the action of CYP27B1 into 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. This active form of vitamin D will serve as a ligand for the Vitamin D receptor expressed in several cells, thus regulating numerous physiological functions. Despite its important role, vitamin D insufficiency is widespread, which can be explained by a wide range of factors. This lecture emphasizes factors compromising the cutaneous synthesis of vitamin D, such as the solar zenith angle (which is influenced by latitude, season, and the time of day), meteorological conditions, air pollution, skin type, aging, and sunscreen use. For additional information and registration details, please visit our official conference website at: https://lnkd.in/dkNyZjZb Don't miss out on this exceptional opportunity to gain profound insights into the intricate relationship between our evolutionary heritage and our modern-day health choices.
