A really important and timely report from Irish Council for Civil Liberties on self censorship among community and voluntary organisations in receipt of state funding. 37% said they had curtailed their advocacy, comms and campaigning due to a fear of it impacting their funding. It contains this key recommendation: "All funding agreements between the State and NGOs should be modified to clearly state that the acceptance of funding does not preclude criticism of government policy, campaigning or advocacy. New article with Aaron Brusseel and Peter Raeymaeckers in Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly. We find, based on a vignette experiment, that local policy makers are open for input by advocacy organisations when designing poverty alleviation policies. Especially when these advocacy organisations apply direct and professional tactics. This nuances as least partly the primacy of politics assumption (according to which politicians are increasingly averse to societal input in the policy making process). Transit advocacy has a positive impact on communities, but a growing trend threatens transit's future: anti-transit organizations posing as pro-transit experts. Here at the City of Hobart, we are gearing up for the 2024 State Election with a strategic and collaborative approach to advocacy, to ensure that Hobart's needs are properly recognised in policy and funding decisions at state level. "Our advocacy priorities reflect the pressing issues facing our city and align with our vision for a vibrant, resilient, and sustainable Hobart," Anna Reynolds, Hobart Lord Mayor said. "We are committed to addressing these priorities through practical partnerships and innovative solutions." In July last year, the Hobart City Council endorsed an updated Intergovernmental relations Framework and Advocacy Strategy 2023-2027 which aims to enhance the City’s ongoing relationships with other levels of government and improve the City’s capacity to advocate for decisions and resources that meet the needs of the Hobart community. Our advocacy priorities for the City of Hobart include: 1. Addressing Housing Access and Affordability 2. Boosting Hobart’s Antarctic and Science Sectors 3. Accelerating Climate Action 4. Investing in Community-based Sports Facilities 5. Diversifying Transport Options 6. Unlocking Hobart’s Potential as a Visitor Destination In line with these priorities, the City of Hobart is asking both the Tasmanian and Australian Governments to invest in important facilities for visitors at kunanyi / Mt Wellington. Cr Reynolds highlighted the importance of this investment, pointing out that the site currently attracts 400,000 visitors each year, with expectations to reach 700,000 in the next ten years. "Cradle Mountain and Freycinet have improved their visitor experiences. Doing the same for kunanyi / Mt Wellington is crucial for the state," said Cr Reynolds. Amy Russell, the general manager of Wellington Park Management Trust, expressed the Trust's support for Hobart's call for planning and investment in kunanyi / Mt Wellington. They are also seeking backing for this in the upcoming State Budget.
