TalkLife welcomes the UK government's intention to give mental health ‘the same focus and attention as physical health’, especially focusing on the mental health of children and young people. We also welcome the government's commitment to modernise the Mental Health Act, as parts of the existing legislation are over 40 years old. The hope is that people are treated with more dignity and respect when they are at their most unwell. Announced by the monarch in the House of Lords last week, the King’s Speech also pledges a new Children’s Wellbeing Bill as part of the Government’s plans for education reform. This promises to influence and strengthen the legislation around children’s wellbeing. We believe that mental health support is equally important from prevention through to crisis support. Our online peer support platform is accessible before a mental health issue is apparent, between therapy sessions, and to support keeping well/relapse prevention after any treatment. Peer support is based on the premise that the meaning of recovery can be different for everyone and that people can benefit tremendously from the sharing of experiences, being listened to and respected, being supported to find meaning in their experiences and a path to recovery that works for them, ultimately enabling them to lead a fulfilling and satisfying life (World Health Organisation) By creating a network of understanding and empathy, we can address mental health issues before they escalate, reducing the need for more intensive interventions. Integrating peer support into mental health strategy aligns with the goals of the new Mental Health Bill, by making mental health care more efficient and accessible for all. Non-police response to mental health events require substantial training with clear policy, procedures, and protocols for 9-1-1 call takers and dispatchers. This laissez-faire approach to 9-1-1 operations is not unique to Phoenix. “The Justice Department zeroed on the city’s 911 operations. Even though the city has invested $15 million to send non-police responders to mental health calls, the city hasn’t given the 911 call-takers and dispatchers necessary training.” As the US transitions to a more robust response to mental health emergencies, agencies need to be more deliberate with training and policy in 9-1-1.

In light of recent events in the UK, we've seen an increase in blue light services reaching out for support. It's crucial to recognise how these occurrences are impacting our Muslim and BAME practitioners. At Social Work Toolkit, we urge management teams to reflect on the fear and anxiety staff may experience while serving our communities. Providing effective support is essential during these challenging times. Consider implementing joint visits, clear risk assessments, peer supervision, and regular check-ins to ensure your team feels supported. Moreover, we must extend this understanding to children and families who may be experiencing distress from direct or indirect abuse. The recent escalations in our communities are alarming, and it’s vital that we come together to offer support and compassion. Let’s not underestimate the importance of a simple 'cup of tea' and be mindful of the emotional and physical risks facing those affected. Together, we can make a difference.

👉 Through restorative justice (RJ) we can address the conflicts among young people RJ practices can help improve young people's ability to communicate effectively, express their emotions more constructively, and learn to find solutions that allow them to also understand how a victim of aggression feels and also the motivation for the perpetrator's inappropriate behavior. RJ focuses on repairing harm and promoting understanding rather than punishment, making it an effective method of working with young people. Therefore, young people acquire skills not only for their personal development but also for life in society. Recognize something about addiction, folks. It is first and foremost a SPIRITUAL BATTLE. Don’t let a society that doesn’t believe in God tell you different. The medical and psychological labeling of addiction is just that: a medical and psychological term used to describe a fundamentally spiritual issue.
