The 2024 Atlantic and Caribbean hurricane season, predicted to be exceptionally active due to La Niña conditions, is in full swing and causing pervasive damage. 🌪 Hurricane Beryl, now the earliest Category 5 storm ever recorded, has caused extensive damage and disruptions across several #Caribbean islands, affecting populations, infrastructure, and livelihoods. The widespread impact has created urgent humanitarian needs across multiple sectors. Hurricane Beryl, the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, have made headlines with its rapid intensification and impact on the Caribbean, emphasizing the increasing unpredictability of tropical storm behavior due to climate change. My heart goes out to all my colleagues, friends and their families in the Eastern Caribbean who were affected by Hurricane Beryl. Natural disasters increase the risk of human trafficking in several ways: 1) Increased vulnerability - internally displaced persons, especially women and children, are at higher risk of exploitation due to their vulnerable situations. 2) Breakdown of social structures: disruption of community and family networks, leaving individuals without support systems. 3) Economic hardship: The economic fallout from disasters can push individuals into desperate situations, making them more susceptible to traffickers’ promises of work or financial stability. Hurricane Beryl decimated many fishing vessels and tourist establishments in Carriacou, Grenada 4) Law enforcement challenges: In the chaos following a disaster, law enforcement and social services may be overwhelmed, reducing their ability to prevent and respond to trafficking. 5) Disruption of education: School closures can leave children unsupervised and more vulnerable to traffickers. So, what can be done to reduce vulnerabilities and build resilience: -Provide immediate humanitarian assistance and support services - safe shelters, psychological support, legal aid, and economic opportunities to disaster survivors -Ensure the presence of law enforcement or some type of security and safety -Maintain family reunification services to protect at-risk individuals. To achieve the above, a country would need to collaborate with other governments, NGOs, and international organizations to address both immediate and long-term needs following a disaster.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS We are five days out from a major disaster across the Texas Gulf Coast. As power begins to come back on, please know the following: * Wharton County still has over 4,000 power outages. *Power being restored doesn't mean it is connected to houses. Those lines might be down. *On a 1.0 scale, Wharton County's SOCIAL VULNERABILITY INDEX is high, with even higher numbers for Cities of Wharton and El Campo (See the image). Our highest demographics are senior adults and children. That means we are more highly impacted during a disaster. *THIS IS A DISASTER. The damage is not "just vegetative" and we have humanitarian needs. It is also not "just" in areas previously affected by flooding disasters. We have small isolated communities and residences in the county and need to get eyes on them and resources to them. People have damaged cars, inability to get gas and inability to get to cooling centers and mass feeding locations. *It is possible to still have disaster fatalities this far out. A heat wave is the greatest contributing factor to fatalities after a disaster. *If your agency serves home health patients or families with children, please contact us to document unmet needs. *We need help getting damage documented in iSTAT for survivors who can't do it themselves.
