The first phase of a National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. Classification overhaul will take effect in Q1 of 2025, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association announced. The changes are designed to simplify the classification system by using a standardized approach to LTL pricing based on density, handling, stowability and liability. The NMFTA is planning three listening sessions on the changes next month. The first will be for LTL carriers on Aug. 6, the second for third-party logistics providers on Aug. 7, and the last for shippers on Aug. 8.

Here's one of those accessorial charges from UPS that I just don't get... There was a time when package charges were determined by zone and weight (actual or dimensional).......and that was it....... BUT, ff a shipper was not properly recording packages, it was found through a manual audit process (regularly scheduled or on demand) requiring people, scales, measuring chains, and then the completion of a little piece of paper called a shipping charge correction, manually keyed onto their bills, and the SCC being returned to them, stuffed in an envelope wit their bill. This was a tremendously costly process, but meant to recover revenue, and there was no charge to the customer, regardless of how many SCC's were generated...daily, weekly, monthly - it didn't matter....and still, the carrier missed many $$$$$$ Now, it's all automated....the carrier systems take care of everything, and all (most) shipper errors are recovered..... So why the charge? If you say "to change shipper behavior", 40 whacks with a wet noodle!!!!

Had a call today with an LTL shipper who is struggling with carrier reclasses. They actually take the time to measure their shipments with a tape measure, but it does not solve the problem.
