The 2030 Agenda aims at achieving an equitable, peaceful and prosperous world and provides a global blueprint for people and the planet, now and in the future. Many international agreements aim to align with the 2030 Agenda, such as those adopted in the same year (2015): the Sendai Framework and the Paris Agreement of the UNFCCC. Many of the national targets in the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) of the Paris Agreement reflect the global SDGs. The NDC is the main instrument of the Paris Agreement: Parties establish self reported targets for greenhouse gas reductions and adaptation targets to which they have committed. Subsequent to the adoption of the SDGs, other environmental agreements also investigated how their targets matched up with the SDGs and could help achieve the 2030 Agenda. Given that a major pillar of the SDGs is combating environmental degradation, sustainable ecosystem management (i.e., nature based solutions) is explicitly addressed under goals 1, 2, 4, 8, 9, 11, 14 and 15. Disaster risk reduction and resilience are mentioned in goals 1, 2, 4, 9, 11, 13, 14 and 15. #sdgs2030 #unfccc #DRR #climatechange

Jambo, A great initiative by The Government of France and UNEP, in association with the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) for coming up with a splendid idea of hosting a : "Buildings And Climate Global Forum" Which will bring together ministers and high-level representatives of key organisations in an effort to spur the decarbonisation in the buildings and construction sector, which happens to contributes up to 21% of the Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions. 🌎 We are at COP28 UAE and are proud to add our voice as a signatory to a Global Call to Action asking the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Paris Agreement to put the culture sector and its industries at the heart of #ClimateAction at #COP28 🌍 This initiative was launched by the Climate Heritage Network, with International Council of Museums (ICOM) among its key founding signatories. The Global Call to Action asks that the UNFCCC adopt a Joint Work on Culture and Climate Action’ decision (JWD) at the #COP28 and the wheels are in motion.... ... 📣🌟 📣 The UAE and Brazil have announced the Group of Friends of Culture-Based Climate Action (GFCBCA), an international coalition of UN Member states aimed at building political momentum to recognise culture as a uniquely powerful force in the climate change policy. Following the close of #UNFCCC #SB60, here are a few reflections on how we can build on the discussions to enhance climate action and ambition. 1️⃣ While technical decisions will continue in #COP29Baku, it’s important to highlight action and share experiences now. 🌱 I listened to negotiations on Article 6.8 (#NonMarketApproaches) and couldn't help thinking about existing and actionable examples, like innovative finance projects that support the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of coastal blue carbon ecosystems, aka Nature-based Solutions or Ecosystem-based Adaptation. 2️⃣ To effectively deploy an all-hands-on-deck approach to climate action, we need to utilize all sustainable solutions and ensure finance is accessible at all levels of implementation. 🌏 Diverse financing for early-stage #readiness support the bridge necessary to reduce emissions now, and the Voluntary Carbon Market, #Article6, and other climate finance is one of the ways to get there. 3️⃣ Urgent action is needed now for hope of meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement. Biennial #Transparency Reports (BTR) are expected to be submitted ahead of COP29 and enhanced, more ambitious NDCs ahead of #COP30Belem. Global commitments and underlying details are needed to demonstrate and build greater ambition necessary to translate this global process to local action. 4️⃣ We can’t act alone for transformational change. #Partnerships are essential. ✨ The photo is of a windswept, small but mighty Rare delegation with Emily Goodwin. Will next generations experience different world? 🤔 🌐 A recent Synthesis report from IPCC highlights that the current and future generations will experience a hotter and different world depends on choices now and in the near term. The report also indicates that adaptation planning and implementation has progressed across all sectors and regions, with documented benefits and varying effectiveness. Despite progress, adaptation gaps exist, and will continue to grow at current rates of implementation. SOM just published our most recent 2023 Climate Action Report, which highlights our year in climate numbers, projects and advocacy; you can find it at the link here: https://lnkd.in/dwg3kJ9z Here's a little summary of some of the main news inside this document: - SOM is already a Carbon-Neutral company, and we aim to design all our projects for Net-Zero Operational Carbon by 2030, and Net-Zero Whole Life Carbon by 2040 - Principal Yasemin Kologlu just presented our climate efforts and initiatives during several sessions at #cop28 in Dubai, which just ended with the first ever agreement towards a world without fossil fuels. - Principals and Sustainability Engineer Studio Leader Luke Leung helped shaping the White House's Domestic Climate Policy, while Sustainability Director Mina Hasman published the #riba Climate Guide and was included in the inaugural #TIME100 Climate Leaders. - SOM launched a new #WholeLifeCarbonAccounting service this year, which, paired with adaptive reuse design and appropriate retrofit strategies, helps transition our existing cities towards net zero. - #UrbanSequoia, our proposition for buildings to actively sequester carbon and act like urban trees, has been developed and presented at CTBUH, receiving awards and nearing application to real life projects. - We are researching and developing design strategies around carbon sequestering materials, like #masstimber , #bioconcrete, and #engineeredbamboo, and working with our partners and clients around the world to develop a carbon-free construction industry.
