Earth may have had all the elements needed for life all along − contrary to meteorite origin theories🌎 For many years, scientists have predicted that many of the elements that are crucial ingredients for life, like sulfur and nitrogen, first came to Earth when asteroid-type objects carrying them crashed into our planet’s surface. But new research published by our team in Science Advances suggests that many of these elements, called volatiles, may have existed in the Earth from the beginning, while it formed into a planet. Volatiles evaporate more readily than other elements. Common examples include carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen, though our research focused on a group called chalcogens. What do a rocket and an octopus have in common? Thrust! 🚀🐙 Thrust demonstrates Newton’s Third Law of Motion: "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction". A rocket engine produces thrust through action and reaction. The action of the engine produces hot exhaust gases that flow and shoot out the back of the engine at very high speed. In return, a thrusting force is produced in the opposite reaction, pushing the rocket upwards. 💨 🔥 Similar to a rocket, an octopus sucks water into its body, then shoots it out as a jet behind, which pushes the octopus forward. An Intriguing Mars Rock Discovered by NASA's Perseverance Rover | JPL FriendsofNASA.org: NASA’s Perseverance rover discovered “leopard spots” on a vein-filled, reddish rock nicknamed “Cheyava Falls” in Mars’ Jezero Crater during July 2024. Scientists think the spots may indicate that, billions of years ago, the chemical reactions in this rock could have supported microbial life; other explanations are being considered. Analysis by instruments aboard the rover indicates the rock possesses qualities that fit the definition of a possible indicator of ancient life. The rock exhibits chemical signatures and structures that could possibly have been formed by life billions of years ago when the area being explored by the rover contained running water. The rock—the rover’s 22nd rock core sample—was collected on July 21, 2024, as the rover explored the northern edge of Neretva Vallis, an ancient river valley measuring a quarter-mile (400 meters) wide that was carved by water rushing into Jezero Crater long ago.
