Don't Let All Work and No Play Make You Dull We've all heard the phrase "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." 😴 This saying reminds us that human beings need balance - we cannot solely focus on work without enjoying leisure and fun activities. When we become hyper-focused on our jobs and careers, we risk burnout, dulled creativity, strained relationships, and decreased life satisfaction. On the other hand, pursuing hobbies, experiencing entertainment, spending time with loved ones, and taking vacations provides an array of benefits. It refreshes our minds, boosts our moods, and allows us to return to work recharged and motivated. One of my favorite ways to relax is a Good Lunch/Dinner with Family and taking long walks listening to an audio book or podcast. Getting some Me time, fresh air, and mental stimulation is the perfect balance of productive and restorative for me. So don't let all work and no play render you dull and unfulfilled. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to take a break and spend time with my family. It was time well spent going on a bike ride with my sons. The wind in my hair, the sun on my face, and the fresh air in my lungs were just what I needed to clear my head and recharge. Spending quality time with loved ones is a precious gift that we should never take for granted. When it comes to achieving work-life balance, there are many healthy habits that can help us get there. Some examples include exercising regularly, meditating, or simply spending time with our loved ones. We can improve our overall well-being and performance at work by prioritizing self-care and taking steps to reduce stress. It's important to remember that work-life balance is not just about taking a break from work. It's about investing in our long-term health and happiness. When we take care of ourselves, we can show up as our best selves at work and in our personal lives. So, let's make self-care a priority and enjoy the benefits of a balanced life.

Final Friday Post 📫 As we head into the weekend, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the importance of work-life balance and how it can positively impact both our professional and personal lives 🤓 As a passionate professional, I've always been driven to give my utmost to my team, the company I work for, and my career. However, I've come to realise that maintaining a healthy work-life balance is not only crucial for my own well-being but also for fostering a thriving and engaged team 🤝🏻 Especially during the summer holidays, I've made it a priority to be as flexible as possible with my team. I understand the significance of taking time off to unwind, recharge, and spend quality moments with loved ones. By encouraging and supporting my team members to do the same, I've witnessed remarkable results 😇 When we prioritise work-life balance, it's incredible how our team members give back even more. By allowing them the flexibility to be present for their kids & families over the summer holidays, they have a renewed energy and a real sense of gratitude. These moments they so desperately needed allow them to regain focus, increase productivity, and bring fresh perspectives to their work 💪🏽 Now, I must admit that I'm not exempt from occasionally falling into the trap of putting work above everything else. But it's during those moments that I remind myself of the incredible value of work-life balance and the positive impact it has on my team and our collective succes 💫 So, as we step into the weekend, I encourage each one of you to prioritise your own work-life balance. Take a step back, relax, and indulge in the moments of nothingness that your mind and body crave. Work/Life Imbalance? Are you stuck working in an environment that doesn’t support you enjoying life outside of work? I was there several years ago at a private employer that had an expectation to work 10-12 hour days and didn’t support work/life balance. I remember on one occasion when we were moving office locations, I worked for 36 hours straight. I was so grateful for my pillow after that event. You must get out of that toxic environment for the sake of your mental health and for your family. I’m so grateful I now work for an employer that values work/life balance at the Virginia Department of Transportation. You can be a much more productive employee when you have a healthy balance of work and life. Play sports, go out to dinner with friends and family, take regular week-long vacations or weekend trips, spend time with your pets, enjoy some quiet time at home, or even take up a hobby. This past year, I did that very thing and wrote a book and had it published! It’s even made it’s way out to Barnes & Noble and Amazon. My book, Close Calls in Paradise, chronicles my life and describes over 25 events in my life which could have resulted in the loss of life or sustaining serious injuries. It includes encounters with sharks, an alligator, jellyfish, lightning, tornado, and even falling 150 feet off a cliff. I would have never imagined writing a book, but I completed it over this past year. The bottom line is to find ways to enjoy life outside of work which will help you embrace a healthy work/life balance. What better way right now to take some time off to enjoy the holidays!
