This is a great list. In particular, I'm not surprised to see "Community Outreach" here. The past decade has seen some of the biggest and most significant community organizing efforts in history. Why? Because people feel emboldened to use their voices, demand fairness and justice, and be valued, seen, and understood. (Rightfully so, IMHO). Companies would do well to listen to those voices and accommodate them, invite deeper dialogue, and importantly, learn from them. Savvy outreach skills - including building rapport with constituents, investing in long term relationships, understanding people's underlying beliefs, and being a great listener - will go a long and far way in accelerating sustained career success.

The common element among all five of these skills is the human element--evidence of our continued move toward building businesses that are resilient and responsive, flexible, values-centric (while also being tech-supported) and sustainable... I hope. Like others here, I agree there are soft skills embedded within these: communications, intellectual curiosity, emotional intelligence, etc., which, while more challenging to 'upskill', ultimately yield more valuable contribution than the hard stuff. Anyone can learn database management, but learning how to better communicate with your direct reports (leading to better performance and job satisfaction) is a horse of a different color.

For aspiring and established leaders, upskilling isn't just about staying relevant or even business acumen for that matter; it's about leading the charge into the future. These are a few areas I believe are valuable: Upskilling in Emerging Areas: Vision over trends: Don't chase every shiny new skill. Instead, develop a strategic vision for your future and identify which emerging areas will unlock your long-term career goals. Align your upskilling with this vision, focusing on areas that will elevate your leadership impact. Build the foundation: Before diving into the latest, ensure you are in pursuit of mastery of core leadership skills like strategic thinking, complex problem-solving, and emotional intelligence.  Mentorship and peer learning: Surround yourself with thought leaders and successful practitioners in your chosen emerging area. Seek mentorship, join mastermind groups, and actively participate in communities to accelerate your learning and gain insights. Action beyond training: Upskilling isn't just about attending courses. You must be intentional and take deliberate action to practice these new skills. Take calculated risks and embrace the learning loop of action and reflection.

IMHO these “new jobs” aren’t really new. They are the same jobs we’ve had for the last ten years with new names. We tend do that regularly. Fir example Executive Director became CEO, Directirs became VP,and so on. “Soft skills” have always been important but sort of under the radar. they are now being recognized as essential for success. Relationships are the cornerstone of success. The best way of UpSkilling (a ridiculous term) is to become as aware as possible to who you are and what you want.

An interesting list that for the most part puts the organization’s ability to make a sale or profit in the market. Barring “Community outreach” there is little here that speaks to our desperate need for fostering inclusion, creating safe places to work, building organizations that make a positive contribution to the social contexts in which they operate, and the importance of maintaining a balance between profit, people, planet and purpose. What are the skills that would help us do that?
