Why Attend? Experience Driven-Insights - over the past 30 years, Dr. Jeff DeGraff has been in over 250 business in the fortune 500 explaining and understanding the key skills required to innovate. Since 2019, our work with military audiences through Project Mercury has succeeded in unlocking change through an invitation to participants to 'test the limits of self-authorizing behaviors' with over 450 certified military innovation graduates. Insightful discussions on dual-use technologies at the NATO industry conference in Ottawa organized by Policy Insights Forum earlier this week. Good points made by speakers, including my colleague Steve Patrick, on how to connect with NATO on the alliance’s needs so that industry can prepare and respond. Also good points made on risks around being overly prescriptive for equipment requirements that can create more delays and unnecessary burden and costs in procurement processes, versus a stronger performance-based approach more conducive to innovative solutions and procurement at the speed of relevance. To cap off the conference, compelling remarks delivered by Business Council of Canada CEO Goldy Hyder on the criticality for our nation of investing in security and defence to safeguard our economic prosperity; and the need for an assertive industrial strategy and to promote our global/national champions, in the current geolpolitical environment with protectionism on the rise and supply chain risks/disruptions.

Many critical initiatives of the Ukrainian defense tech ecosystem are led by people with a background in civil society, not the military. Effective cooperation in the civil society domain requires a high level of social capital, which depends on many informal networks of trust. Those networks enable fast communication across different communities, fuelling innovation. In my view, new technical solutions are, to a great extent, byproducts of innovative collaboration methods. In this respect, a civil society experience is beneficial, as it allows to easily accommodate various backgrounds, cultures and communication styles. #Ukraine #defense #innovations

What an incredibly busy and productive week at #NIF23 and #NIAG #Stockholm. Thank you to Sir Stuart Atha for summarising it so effectively: #NATO Industry Call to Arms - Stockholm Oct 23 Reflections on a week of big issues, remarkable government-military-industry alignment and outstanding Swedish hospitality. Urgency of the moment present in every syllable uttered. In the near term we must continue to stand full square behind the brave Ukrainian people and armed forces providing them with the support they require in their hour of need. Simultaneously we need to expand production capacity, develop more resilient supply chains and work coherently across a plethora of initiatives and institutions. The demands of Collective Defence has no place for national protectionism. To succeed we must all align behind and deliver the Defence Production Action Plan (DPAP). This plan is far more ambitious than the title suggests. If executed, it will address the risks sitting within a complex military-industrial enterprise facing high-intensity war-fighting at scale, Article V operations. This is the mission of the NATO Industry Advisory Group (NIAG) which has been reenergised and refocused under the dynamic leadership of our chair, Rudy PRIEM Defence needs industry but industry also needs Defence and we must examine the Nordic Total Defence paradigm and ensure our national Defence plans are similarly robust and comprehensive. The political intent is clear. The mandate is agreed. The plan has ambitious objectives. We now must act as one, governments, militaries and industries (big and small; traditional and non-traditional), for the sake of Ukraine and our future defence and security.
