I joined Raleigh Chamber this morning for our community success forum! The forum provided a deep dive into the latest Regional Skills Analysis (RSA), a survey of nearly 1,000 businesses across the greater Triangle region powered by RTI International. The study uncovered local businesses' short- and long-term hiring needs, the training and education levels employees need for future jobs, and whether employers plan to expand their workforce. Some of the highlights: 1. The Triangle expects future growth across most industries & sectors, with the most significant growth expected in the public sector, healthcare, and professional services. 2. Triangle employers identify housing, childcare, and wages as the most challenging obstacles in recruiting & retaining talent today. 3. Durable, essential, or commonly referred to as "soft skills" remain difficult to find amongst job seekers & employees. The four most significant soft skills barriers identified include: responsibility and self-discipline, critical thinking, communication, and taking initiative. 4. Employers are starting the process of "developing" talent earlier through formal internships, apprenticeships, and career & technical education (CTE). 5. Today, there is a shortage of higher education faculty. A remedy to the problem is leveraging industry practitioners who bring real-time experiences to the classroom. There are efforts to create pathways from industry into the classroom through teaching. Today was incredibly informative, and it was wonderful to hear top talent headlines impacting the Triangle. ❓I'm curious about what you may be hearing or seeing as it relates to workforce demands in your regions? “Attacking and Defending DEI: in America” On January 21, 2024, The New York Times published an *article by Nicholas Confessore, which draws the parallels between some state-wide anti-DEI initiatives - and what it considers an ‘attack against the rights of most Americans.’ In the U.S., diversity is widely acknowledged to encompass “women; Black, Indigenous and people of color communities; veterans; people with disabilities; L.G.B.T.Q. people; and a multigenerational work force.” The DEI struggle can be found alive and well in the real world in organizations’ workforces, regardless of the state in which they reside. Workforce Diversity Network continues to explore critical DEI issues in the workforce that can lead to more productive organizations. Last month, our professional development topic focused on the need to create effective DEI goals that have impact. This month, the topic focuses on the practicalities & usefulness of creating DEI internships. Let’s advance the dialogue. What an incredible journey it was to host and address students and corporate partners at Delaware State University's inaugural White Coat Ceremony on February 13th! In a collaborative effort to support Dr. Tony Allen’s commitment to enhancing opportunities for pre-health majors, my company, White Coat | White Collar®, has strategically partnered with Dr. Cherese Winstead of the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Science and Technology. Together, we've brought to life this event and numerous other student development opportunities through my company’s Career Readiness Services™. Feel free to message me to discover more! Dedicated to pre-health majors, this event was more than a tradition; it marked a historic milestone as DSU's first-ever White Coat Ceremony for Pre-Health majors. As the founder of a career development company and a Black female scientist, I am deeply committed to bridging the gap between academia and the workforce, with a focus on empowering Black talent. This moment held profound significance for me. It's remarkable to note that we had over 280 registrants, highlighting the immense interest and underscored the importance of initiatives like these. But this success leads us to ponder: why aren't more companies actively working to bridge the gap between HBCUs and the workforce? White Coat | White Collar®‘s mission is centered around developing career initiatives that provide essential workforce exposure and mentorship, all aimed at fostering a more inclusive and equitable STEM and healthcare workforce for Black talent. To date, White Coat | White Collar®’s reach extends to over 20,000 students across 13 customized programs. Are you keen on implementing a neurodiversity talent strategy at your company? The Frist Center for Autism and Innovation (FCAI) is thrilled to announce an exclusive workshop taking place in September 2024 in Nashville, Tennessee. This workshop, made possible by FCAI in collaboration with UConn's Center for Neurodiversity & Employment Innovation (CNDEI) and AllianceBernstein, is limited to just 15 companies. It offers a unique chance to participate in a full-day event aimed at scoping and designing a neurodiversity program prototype for each organization. UCONN, in collaboration with the Wells Fargo Neurodiversity Program, has developed a specialized curriculum to help organizations incorporate best practices for sourcing, interviewing, and supporting neurodivergent individuals in professional roles or internships. This workshop will guide participants through a comprehensive roadmap to create a plan for implementing a neurodiversity program within their organization, instilling confidence in their approach. Through the FCAI, this workshop incorporates insights from FCAI's expert business scholars. Participating companies will benefit from a measurement of the effectiveness of their efforts and how they align with their goals.
