Many #aircraft development and improvement programs have to rely on wind tunnel tests at a certain point and #testing is often a decisive factor. Core to the investigations for a solid #aerodynamic database, are highly accurate six-component force and moment block #balances. Being the interface between the non-metric support and the metric test specimen their properties are challenging: compact enough to fit into a model fuselage or into an engine nacelle, stiff enough to allow a rigid mounting of the model but still designed to yield a high strain output to measure the forces with precisely placed strain gauges. Often - but not exclusively - used as a model-internal sensor units, the RUAG wind tunnel balances are designed for various physical sizes and load range. Try them out… We have a couple of them available for rent. #windtunnel #loadcell

Does anyone have any favorite resources on rotary airfoil design? For personal fulfillment, I am getting deeper into airfoil design, and I am very much interested in inverse design of airfoils, especially rotary airfoil design. On this cloudy Saturday, I just made a script to generate surfaces of any arbitrary NACA airfoil codes. Last week I went way deeper into relating aircraft mass, MOI, motor torque, step responses, and jerk/jolt rates for stable flight on an arbitrary airframe. Presently, I'm missing the peice to analytically predict RPM thrust torque curves. I can do it qualitatively, only with reasonable accuracy, at low AOA. My ability to predict Bboundary separation and high AOA right now is far less accurate than I feel comfortable with. #eVTOL # Vertical Flight Society #CFD

#Aircraft_Transparencies Market Expected to Grow at a notable CAGR During 2022–2030 https://shorturl.at/lrxCF #Aircraft transparencies refer to the #windshield, canopy, passenger window, lens, or any other component of an #aircraft constructed of transparent materials. The various factors to consider in choosing these transparencies are aerodynamics, structural design, combat exposure, radar cross-section, bird-strike resistance, and electrical requirements. These factors must be balanced with #optical considerations, like haze, surface defects, optical deviation, and optical distortion, so that the part of an #aircraft is not subject to imperfections. Ground proximity! How to investigate #aerodynamic characteristics close to the ground. By using a splitter plate in the test section of the large #windtunnel Emmen of RUAG, the floor boundary layer is minimized and the aerodynamic and flight mechanic effects of the aircraft in landing condition can be identified. Measuring overall aerodynamic forces and moments gives you a detailed understanding on the predicted flight performance, such as range, take-off and landing distance, maneuverability as well as flight stability and control surface efficiency. Local pressure measurements on the business #aircraft model and on the splitter plate provide additional valuable information. Knowing these effects is essential during the design process of the aircraft.

This AvWeek overview is timely as I am planning an imminent study of 2035 A320/737 replacement options looking at different wing and propulsion options - it will added as worked examples in my 'Whole Aircraft Design: So What ...? text book (webstore www.rawavcon.com). My main question from the RISE open rotor blade diameter - I estimate it at over 4m, i.e. larger than the GE9x nacelle diameter on the much larger 777-9 aircraft. The engine axis can be higher (than a turbofans) for a wing installation, reducing the necessary gear length. However, it places the upper blade disk in front off, and above the wing. The resulting outflow consequently affects a considerable section of span which should degrade the wing's span efficiency, while the high AR wings span improves it. The turbfan nacelle diameter will be less, but must be completely below the wing, possibly requiring additional gulling or a high wing. Choices, choices! #aircraftdesign #environment

CH-46 Sea Knight rear gearbox vibration analysis! The CH-46 Sea Knight tandem rotor helicopter (later developed into the current CH-47 Chinook) rear #gearbox is complex with 9 basic #gearmesh frequencies in addition to the planetary gear of the vertical output rotor shaft. With 2x General Electric T58 turboshaft engines running at 19 476 rpm and the rotor shaft turning at 264 rpm, a comprehensive vibration analysis at least covers the frequency range of approx. 1,6 Hz (FTF of rotor shaft) to 18 178 Hz (2x GMF engine input shaft). For blade pass frequencies of the compressor/turbine even higher frequencis are required. Upper spectrum shows rotor rotational frequency (approx. 4 Hz) with harmonics. Harmonic 3 & 6 relates to the blade passing frequency of the tandem rotor blades passing the helicopter fuselage and each other. Middle spectrum shows engine input rotational frequency with harmonics (red markers) and the rotational frequency of the shaft connecting the front gearbox running at 2559 rpm, blue markers. The 26'th and 74'th harmonics represent two of the gear mesh frequencies. Lower spectrum shows the entire frequency range 0 - 20 kHz, a blade pass related frequency is present close to 19 400 Hz.
